McCaffrey has not played a snap this season after suffering a calf/Achilles issue dating back to training camp. Initially, it was reported that he would be ready for Week 1. Instead, he missed the season’s first game and was later placed on injured reserve before their Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

McCaffrey will remain on the IR for a minimum of four weeks, with his earliest date to return being Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers started the season hot, winning their first game of the season in dominant fashion over the New York Jets. However, they have dropped two games in a row and now sit last in the NFC West.

After their Week 2 loss, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that “nobody knows” when McCaffrey will make his comeback.

“We’re dealing with tendinitis so, not one person knows,” Shanahan told reporters, per ESPN. “He doesn’t know. We don’t know and [we will] take it day by day.”

It was reported that McCaffrey was spotted waiting for a flight to Munich on Saturday.

McCaffrey is in his third year with the 49ers and has been a game-changer for the team since arriving at the 2022 trade deadline. In two-plus seasons, McCaffrey has recorded 431 rush attempts for 2,205 yards, 20 rush touchdowns, and an average of 5.1 yards per carry.

The receiving part of his game has been beyond what the 49ers could ask for. McCaffrey has 119 receptions for 1,028 yards, 11 touchdowns, and an average of 8.6 yards per reception in 27 games.

While McCaffrey has been one of the most dynamic players in the league since he entered in 2017, he has also suffered through his fair share of injuries. Whether it was a high ankle sprain, shoulder injury, hamstring, chest/rib sprain, calf strain, or now Achilles, he has missed a ton of time in his football career.

In the meantime, the 49ers will continue to rely on Jordan Mason in the backfield. Since taking over in the starting role, he has been spectacular, recording 67 carries for 324 yards, and two touchdowns

Mason has gone over 100-plus yards in two of the first three games this season.

The 49ers will take on the New England Patriots at home this Sunday.
