San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will be tested in the coming weeks with the absence of key offensive weapons.

“If there was ever a window of opportunity for Brock Purdy to break a lot of the narrative attached to his name, that he is just a coattail rider, it is gonna be this window right now for Brock Purdy,” ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky said.

Star running back Christian McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve due to Achilles tendonitis and a calf strain. Star wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to miss a few weeks because of a calf strain.

San Francisco tight end George Kittle might also miss Sunday’s NFC West rivalry game because of a hamstring injury.

Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is also on injured reserve as he recovers from a gunshot wound. He was recently spotted running routes at Thursday’s practice, but he will miss at least another two games before he makes his NFL debut.

The mounting injuries have dwindled the 49ers’ offensive arsenal. The 49ers will turn to Brandon Aiyuk, Jordan Mason, and Jauan Jennings in the absence of several starters.

Aiyuk is the best wideout on the 49ers, but ever since he signed his four-year, $120 million contract, he hasn’t done much on the field.

Thus far, Aiyuk has tallied just 71 receiving yards on six receptions. In Week 3, the 49ers will likely ask him to be the primary playmaker on offense.

All this to say, Purdy has the chance to showcase his abilities as San Francisco’s signal-caller.

His performance in the coming weeks will be very telling. Is he just another average quarterback? Is he special with or without McCaffrey, Samuel, and Kittle?

Purdy knows the next few games depend on his ability to be efficient and lead the 49ers offense.

“I think our guys are doing a great job and whatever the metrics are showing for not getting open & stuff, I don’t really know if I believe any of that,” Purdy told KNBR. “It’s really about me being efficient, them doing their job & being on the same page.”

Purdy can show one of two things in these next few weeks. He can prove his critics wrong by playing at a high level without his star-studded offense. Or Purdy’s performance will show the league has caught up to him.

Purdy’s biggest challenge thus far in his career begins Sunday.
