Adele’s Goodbye to Fans—Everything She’s Said About Quitting Music

During a recent performance in Germany, Adele revealed she is planning on going on a hiatus—but this isn’t the first time she’s said she wants to pause her music career.

The “Rolling in the Deep” singer wrapped up her Munich residency on August 31, where she announced that she would be taking a long sabbatical from music after the conclusion of her Las Vegas residency. A video of Adele sharing the news during her show has since been uploaded to TikTok by user @niclas.mitz.

Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Adele for comment on Monday.

“I just need a rest and I’ve spent—I’ve spent the last seven years building a new life for myself, and I want to live it now,” she told the audience as she grew emotional.

“I want to live my new life that I’ve been building and I’ll miss you terribly.”

The singer stated that although she had originally planned for the Munich residency to be her last slew of performances before her break, her plans were altered when she moved her postponed Las Vegas concerts to later this year.

“I have 10 shows to do, but after that, I will not see you for an incredibly long time, and I will hold you dear in my heart for the whole next of my break,” she said.

“And I will fantasize about these shows and any shows that I’ve done over the last three years. And I’ll really, really hold them in the bottom of my heart forever. It’s been amazing.”

Adele initially announced her Las Vegas residency in 2021 but disappointed her fans when she postponed the tour to November 2022. In a video she uploaded online, the singer explained that this was because the caliber of the show didn’t meet her expectations and she and her team weren’t ready.

Once the shows began, Adele eventually extended her dates into 2023 and through most of 2024. Her final performances are scheduled for October 25 to November 23, 2024.

This isn’t the first time that Adele has spoken about taking a break from her music career. In July, the Grammy-winner told Germany’s ZDF public broadcast service that her “tank is quite empty” and she is looking to do other “creative things.”

“I don’t have any plans for new music at all. I want a big break after this and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while,” she said. “You know, I don’t even sing at home at all. How strange is that?”

Adele also revealed that she doesn’t enjoy being famous, telling the outlet: “I miss everything about before I was famous, I think probably being anonymous the most.

“I don’t like being famous. I love that I get to make music all the time whenever I want and people are receptive to it and like it, because that’s pretty unimaginable… that never happens to people.”

The singer also told the Hollywood Reporter in December 2023 that she wasn’t planning on releasing any new music soon.

“I get nervous about wearing my voice out [at the residency]. It’s a lot of singing. It’s two hours. It’s all live. It’s a lot,” she said.

“And I f****** motormouth and chat me a** off as well. But yeah, I have nothing to say yet. I haven’t even thought about it.”

Adele also talked about her concerns about being a musician back in 2017 during her Adele Live 2016 tour, which ran from February 29, 2016, to June 29, 2017.

“Touring isn’t something I’m good at. Applause makes me feel a bit vulnerable,” she told the audience at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium, per the New Zealand Herald.

“I don’t know if I will ever tour again. The only reason I’ve toured is you. I’m not sure if touring is my bag.”

However, the singer said touring changed her life, adding: “I understand why I do it.”

Adele had voiced similar reservations about touring during the first show of the Australian leg of the tour in Perth on February 27, 2017.

“I don’t know if I’ll tour again but I’m here now and it’s f****** beautiful and I love it,” she said during a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” in Perth, per The Guardian.
