A body found in a suitcase at a train station in Long Island has sparked a police investigation, with the killer still believed to be at large.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad discovered the body at Huntington Station on September 2 after responding to a call reporting suspicious activity around noon, ABC7NY reported.

The body, found in a suitcase next to a nearby apartment complex, was located in a wooded area along Nassau Road.

Newsweek reached out to Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad for comment via email.

According to NBC New York, a foot or a shoe appeared to be hanging out of the luggage.

Chris Smocer told the outlet that her daughter found the suitcase in the woods while on a morning walk.

She said, “I came over and I got out of the car, and I approached it, and I said, ‘Oh my God it stinks here,’ and the flies. And I said, we need to call the police.”

A neighbor told Eyewitness News, “The smell was rancid. Potent. Something I’ve smelled before.”

A resident at the nearby apartment complex reportedly heard a woman screaming at around three in the morning on Sunday, according to ABC7NY.

News of the victim’s identity and cause of death is not available, and police have said that this will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding the body is asked to contact Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives at (631) 852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

In an unrelated case, a body was left in pieces in a grocery cart at and set on fire in Yonkers, New York in early August, according to Fox5.

Police learned that the victim was reportedly killed inside an apartment in the Bronx, where the killers allegedly dismembered the body and wrapped it up, transporting it in a grocery cart on a Metro-North train, and later dumped it in Westchester County after alighting at the Mt. Vernon West train stop.

When investigators searched the apartment, they reportedly found teeth and limbs, illegal drugs, and a gun.

Severed hands were also found in a pot in the apartment, as well as feet in the freezer, according to NBC New York.

The identities of the victim and the killers have not been disclosed.
