A woman has gained the support of people online after sharing why she chose to kick her sister out of her wedding reception.
The woman, who goes by u/ashleighbarkley on Reddit, took to the platform on October 15 to detail how her sibling had worn white on the special day—despite being specifically told not to. The post has garnered over 23,000 upvotes, with most commenters supporting the 27-year-old bride’s bold decision to boot her 31-year-old sister from the event.
“I got married two weeks ago, and it was supposed to be the happiest day of my life,” the bride wrote.
She explained that her relationship with her sister has always been fraught with tension, marked by consistent attempts to one-up her at family events. Despite this, she expected her sister to respect a simple dress code for the wedding: no one wears white but the bride.
The bride had made this stipulation clear months in advance, but her sister openly disagreed, accusing her of being “insecure” and dismissing traditional wedding decorum.
On the day of the wedding, the sister arrived in a dress so bridal-like that it caused immediate distress. The bride recalled in the post that the dress was floor-length and white with lace detailing.
“My heart dropped, and I straight-up asked her what the hell she was thinking,” the bride said. The sister’s response was: “It’s not that white, and besides, no one will care.”
Refusing to let the affront slide, the bride asked her sister to change, saying that she would not be welcome inside otherwise.
“The bride made the right decision by refusing to let her sister return,” Rachel Goldberg, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in California, told Newsweek.
Despite the bride’s attempt to lay out boundaries on her big day, her older sibling refused to comply with the rules.
“She threw a tantrum about how I was ruining her day and stormed off, telling everyone I was being ‘bridezilla.’ Some family members told me to let it slide because ‘she’s just like that,’ but I was done,” the bride said.
She then instructed staff not to allow her sister entry unless she changed her outfit. The sister never returned, and now claims the bride ruined their relationship.
The bride’s parents sided with the sister, arguing it was “only a dress” and that she should have ignored the situation. Nevertheless, the bride felt her sister’s actions were a deliberate attempt to sabotage her special day.
“Based on the family’s reaction, it seems the sister frequently gets away with her behavior, creating a dynamic where she feels free to act however she wants,” Goldberg said.
“Her actions are often excused with, ‘she’s just like that,’ which fosters a sense of entitlement and dismisses others’ legitimate feelings,” the therapist added.
With firm support from her husband, but divided opinions from her broader family, the bride went on to gain the backing of viewers online.
“Your sister disrespected your clear dress instructions and showed up in a white gown almost identical to a wedding dress,” one reader said. “She was trying to steal the spotlight at your wedding.
“You were right to uphold your boundaries and not let her ruin your day. Ignore the family members who say you should’ve just let it slide. This was your special day, and she didn’t care.”
That comment has been upvoted 13,000 times.
Another added: “If it’s only a dress, why couldn’t she change? She’s the one that chose this hill to die on.”
“She whined that you ruined her day? Because your wedding day was definitely about her,” another viewer said. “Honestly, if you haven’t already, go [no contact] with her and at least [low contact] or temporary [no contact] with anyone taking her side.
“You don’t need that noise in your life. Congratulations on your marriage!”
Goldberg says that while boundaries should have been established long before the wedding, this significant event provided a crucial opportunity for the bride to assert her limits.
“The family should follow her lead and establish their own boundaries with the sister,” she said “Without this, it’s unlikely she will change, and she’ll continue to struggle in her relationships.”
