Connor Zilisch Suffers Crash At Bristol Damaging Championship Hopes

Connor Zilisch’s pursuit of the ARCA Menards Series championship took a turn at Bristol Motor Speedway when a collision with a lapped car severely damaged his title chances.

The 18-year-old racer, who had started the race from pole position, found himself caught in an unavoidable incident with Logan Misucara, who had spun out and re-entered the track. The repercussions of this crash now leave Zilisch relying heavily on a significant mishap for his rival, William Sawalich, if he hopes to keep his championship aspirations alive.

Whilst speaking to the media after the race, Zilish commented, as quoted by Yardbarker.com:

“I’m fine. Just the 9 and the 22, they got together.

“9 hit the fence up at the top of the track and I don’t know if she didn’t hold the brake or what but came down the track right in front of me and ended our day.”

Although clearly frustrated by the turn of events, Zilisch acknowledged the efforts of his Pinnacle Racing Group team and Silver Hare Racing, adding:

“So, I hate to end a season like that and lose a championship in that way too, it’s frustrating. But we’ve had a hell of a year with our Pinnacle Racing Group team and everyone at Silver Hare Racing and nothing to hang our heads on. Just a frustrating way to go out.”

The crash’s impact on the championship standings cannot be overstated. With Sawalich leading in ARCA East points and Landen Lewis also in contention, Zilisch needed a stellar performance to keep pace. Now, his fate largely hinges on Sawalich encountering substantial adversity in the remaining races.

“Yeah really proud there’s nothing to be too upset about. Obviously, one race can end a championship and when it’s an eight race championship any one race can take you out of contention. So, frustrating way to end it but still a lot to be proud of. I got a truck race later tonight so I guess I got something to look forward to at least.”

Despite the setback, Zilisch’s focus quickly shifted to the upcoming Truck Series race at The Last Great Colosseum, where he will again start from the pole position.

This comes after Zilisch signed with Red Bull Racing.

“It’s super special to me,” Zilisch said in a press release from the team. “It’s cool that they surprised me. Having Red Bull on my helmet is not something I take lightly. I hope to make the most of it. It’s cool to be part of an elite group of people.”
