This trend is likely to continue in the weeks to come. Nine children have been among the 5,000 deaths this flu season.
The CDC reported for the week ending December 27, that 8.2% of outpatient visits in the United States were due to flu-like illness. This is the highest number of visits since 1997, when the CDC began tracking these types of visits. This season, the flu was responsible for over 11 million illnesses and 120,000 hospitalizations.
Fifty-five states have high or very high flu activity.
The symptoms are common – fever, chills and fatigue, coughing, sore throat – but reports indicate that they are stronger and more persistent.
The worst part is that it’s likely to get even worse.
The latest data are from the week before Christmas and do not yet reflect illness caused by travel or holiday gatherings.
Krista Kniss is an epidemiologist with the CDC’s division of influenza. She said that it’s too early to tell what impact the holiday season will have on flu activity. “We are not even close to being finished .”
