Dog Can Play the Recorder Better Than Most Children: ‘Musical Genius’

The internet is obsessed with a Labrador retriever with some special talents as he showed off his newest trick: playing the recorder.

Brewski the Lab lives with his owner, Chance Crawford, in Mississippi and has become a social media sensation as Crawford shares clips of his dog playing golf, learning how to use a push scooter, and even reeling in a catch while fishing.

“Brewski can do it all,” Crawford, 30, proudly told Newsweek. “Play the flute, play golf, catch fish, he can even drive the zero turn lawn mower.”

Now a video has gone viral of Brewski tackling the recorder, a type of flute many people will remember learning in elementary school, and doing a better job than most kids starting off.

A clip shared to Crawford’s TikTok account @heytakeachance on September 21 shows Brewski holding the recorder in his paws and giving short, sharp blows.

He then moves the flute away from his paws and, holding it in his mouth, blows a longer note.

And TikTok users loved it, with the clip boasting 5 million likes and 25 million views, as one commenter asked: “Do you do weddings?”

“I know Darude Sandstorm when I hear it,” another joked, with one requesting “Hot Cross Buns.”

“How does a dog play a flute better than me,” one user commented, and another declared: “The music industry is shaking rn [right now].”

And as one commenter put it: “A music genius I’m afraid.”

Self-employed handyman Crawford is delighted by the response to Brewski’s videos, as the dog deserves the “recognition” for his intelligence.

Brewski has been part of his family since he was a student at the University of Mississippi, and told Newsweek: “I didn’t choose Brewski, Brewski chose me.”

He said he was walking home after partying at a local bar when he heard a puppy crying. When he investigated, he found Brewski caught on a fence as he had tried to climb out of his pen.

Crawford saved the pup from the painful and dangerous situation and woke the homeowners to let them know what had happened.

When he got home, he took a nap outside of his house—and was woken by a small yellow puppy licking his face. Brewski had escaped once again and tracked Crawford to his home over a mile away.

Yet again, Crawford brought the puppy to the owners, where they revealed their Lab had had 12 puppies and they were struggling to find homes for them all—so they offered the escape artist pup to Crawford, who happily agreed.

The pair have been together ever since, with Crawford proudly calling Brewski “probably one of the smartest dogs in the world.”

As a Labrador retriever, Brewski’s breed is among the smartest in the world, according to research by Stanly Coren, author of The Intelligence of Dogs.

The professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Psychology previously told Newsweek that his research showed border collies, poodles, German shepherds, golden retrievers, Doberman pinschers, Shetland sheepdogs and Labrador retrievers were the seven dog breeds with the “highest working and obedience intelligence“.
