Dog Refuses to Take No More Peanut Butter for an Answer: ‘I Can Reach, Mom’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A dog’s determination to reach a pot of gold on the kitchen counter has delighted viewers in a recent Instagram clip.

Technically, the food item on the counter wasn’t a pot of gold, but it might as well be for dogs. This dog was gunning for peanut butter, a doggy favorite, after his mom put it back and rudely told him no more in a July 31 Instagram video, posted by @kaylynndykes6. However, a “no” wasn’t going to stop him.

The Staffordshire bull terrier stood on his back legs in the kitchen and his front legs touched the top of the counter. Using all his might, he stretched and reached and extended as far as his legs would go. His one paw held him steady while the other tried touching the jar and pulling it closer. Except he wasn’t as close as he thought.

The caption, written from the dog’s perspective, reads: “I can reach mom I can.”

He truly tried his hardest, and that’s all a parent can ask for. Plus, at least this dog was going after a healthy treat, hoping to get some protein.

Peanut butter almost always tops the list of favorite dog treats for canines, and a few theories shared by Canine Journal might explain the appeal. Some experts believe dogs are drawn to the protein peanut butter provides. Or your dog might run over whenever you open a jar of peanut butter because of its sweet smell.

Thankfully, no matter the reason for their love of the snack, peanut butter is safe for dogs to eat in moderation. Owners should be cautious of what brands they give their dogs, as some might be extremely high in sodium or unhealthy fats.

Newsweek reached out to @kaylynndykes6 via Instagram for additional comment.

Instagram Reactions

The hilarious Instagram clip has received over 305,000 views, 17,500 likes and 100 comments. Viewers were cracking up and cheering for the peanut butter thief.

“Such a good attempt. Got to give them credit,” commented one Instagram user, while a second echoed: “This attempt deserves PB.”

While coming to the dog’s defense, someone wrote: “It’s called stretching…not sneaking food away.”

Another added, “That look back was a cry for help!!” And who could deny that innocent face a little treat?
