Donald Trump‘s campaign has completely misunderstood why Trump’s would-be assassin is being charged in federal court, a former prosecutor has said.

Trump released a statement on Monday furiously denouncing the federal prosecution of Ryan Routh and demanding that the case remain in the Florida court system.

He wrote that the charges against Routh were a politically motivated “slap on the wrist.”

The Department of Justice charged 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh with possession of a firearm while a former felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He allegedly tried to shoot the former president at Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach.

While Routh did not fire any shots on September 15, a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle sticking out near a fence and opened fire. Routh was later arrested after police stopped his car.

Joyce Vance, a former federal prosecutor, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday that the Trump campaign has completely misread the situation.

“They fail to understand the criminal justice system. Current charges were filed quickly so Routh could be arrested/held,” she wrote.

Vance, a frequent Trump critic, also wrote that the Department of Justice “will go to a grand jury & given the evidence they’ve developed” and will likely add charges of attempting to assassinate a former or current presidential candidate.

Newsweek sought email comment from the Trump campaign on Tuesday.

In his statement, Trump wrote that the “Kamala Harris/Joe Biden Department of Justice and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on my life since July.”

“The charges brought against the maniac assassin are a slap on the wrist. It’s no wonder, since the DOJ and FBI have been coming after me nonstop with Weaponized Lawfare since I announced my first Historic Campaign for the Presidency.”

Trump said that the Democrats had tried to impeach him as president for fake claims that he had links to the Russian government and had tried to impeach him for the January 6 riot at the Capitol.

His statement included several other grievances, including his indictment for keeping classified documents in his Florida home, which was dismissed by a federal judge and his conviction for hiding his hush money payments to adult film star, Stormy Daniels, which he still denies.

“From Russia, Russia, Russia, Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine, Iran, Iran, Iran, Impeachment Hoax Number One, Impeachment Hoax Number Two, to the Lawless Documents Hoax brought after an Illegal and unConstitutional Raid of my home, on which I am suing the DOJ for their wrongful acts, to the January 6th Hoax in Washington, D.C., where the J6 Unselect Committee illegally deleted and destroyed all Documents,” he wrote.

“The DOJ and FBI have a Conflict of Interest since they have been obsessed with ‘Getting Trump’ for so long. It’s very difficult to trust the Biden/Harris DOJ/FBI to investigate the assassination attempts, due to Election Interference and the FAKE CASES brought against me, including their control over local D.A.s and A.G.s.”

He also referenced the previous attempt on his life, at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, in which Trump received a cut to the ear.

“Shockingly, after the bullet went through my ear on that fateful day in Butler, Pennsylvania, the FBI Director went before Congress and falsely said that it may not have been a bullet, “It was just glass or shrapnel” – a lie condemned by even my worst enemies. What he said was disgraceful, especially since it was witnessed LIVE by millions of people, and he was forced to immediately retract,” Trump wrote.

“Florida charges would be much more serious than the ones the FBI has announced,” he added. “LET FLORIDA HANDLE THE CASE!”

He called for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to take over the investigation.
