F1 Driver Opens Up on Retirement Claims Ahead Of Mexican Grand Prix
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mexican Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez has recently addressed rumors about his potential retirement, firmly dismissing speculations and reaffirming his commitment to the sport.

With his current contract with Red Bull extending until the end of 2026, Perez has shown no immediate intention of stepping away from Formula 1 despite the countless rumors surrounding his potential exit.

Perez’s performance this season has placed him in the eighth position on the drivers’ standings, with 150 points. It is worth also noting that he has struggled to secure a race victory this year, a concern for his team, Red Bull. In fact, Perez stands out as the only driver among the top four Formula 1 teams without a victory this season. This lackluster performance raises questions about his future role in a team that is accustomed to competitive success.

Speaking ahead of his home race, the Red Bull driver has opened up on the difficulties he has faced during his career to Mexican newspaper Esto, as quoted by GP Blog:

“It’s complicated to understand that Formula 1 as a Latino is always very difficult to achieve. I don’t know, two years is a long time. I don’t know how long I will continue after this contract, it depends on the new generations.”

Despite the speculations about his career longevity, Perez remains optimistic about the future of Mexican drivers in Formula 1. He reveals the need for emerging talents to gain exposure in Europe from a young age to have a viable shot at success. He continued:

“I’ve always said it, they have to be very young in Europe to have a chance, and we see more and more Mexican drivers coming up. I hope we have another Mexican driver soon.”

While Perez may wish to remain focused on his driving and improving his performance, the Red Bull management has been conflicting in their public statements about his future. Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has commented, as quoted by Planet F1:

“Let’s see, but he has to improve his performance.”

Whereas, team principal Christian Horner has stated to the media, as per the same report from Planet F1:

“Ferrari congratulations to them this weekend. They’ve been very, very strong.

“They’ve got two drivers that are competing at the front. McLaren likewise, their drivers, there’s not a big deficit between them.

“So that’s where we really need for the constructors to have Checo come into play.

“Hopefully, with the support he will receive in Mexico, it will give him that boost. Obviously when you qualify out of position, you lose so much time coming through tail-end cars in the top ten that you’ve then lost contact with the rest of the race.”
