Golden Retriever With ‘Only Child Syndrome’ Leaves Internet in Hysterics
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A dog’s quirky personality trait has left viewers online in hysterics.

Bentley, a golden retriever, has a case of “only-child syndrome,” according to his owner. The term is often used to describe a set of characteristics that some believe are common in children who grow up without siblings, including loneliness and a dependence on adult relatives.

The canine was filmed rejecting his stuffed animal toy by pushing it down the stairs, in a now-viral video that has led to laughter online. Bentley’s owner had shared the short clip, which has been viewed more than 1.3 million times, to TikTok on October 12 by @bentleyvthegolden.

Viewers were able to see the male golden retriever sitting at the top of the stairs in his home, with a stuffed animal toy in his mouth. Although he initially appeared to be on good terms with the toy, he suddenly decided to toss it down the stairs. Bentley was captured looking up at his owner with a cheeky grin on his face after disposing of the competition. “Bentley has only child syndrome,” his owner said.

While the video was clearly shared with comedic intent, golden retrievers do have some traits that align well with those associated with only-child syndrome. The breed are known to be great with children and keen to play, but do depend closely on their caregivers and develop strong attachments to their owners.

These dogs rely heavily on their owners for companionship and guidance. They thrive on human interaction and enjoy being the center of their owner’s attention, often seeking out affection and playtime. Their dependence is evident in their eagerness to please, which does make them highly trainable and responsive to commands.

Viewers online have poked fun at Bentley’s case of only-child syndrome by sharing their funny takes on the viral clip in the comments section.

“Time to get him a brother or sister,” one viewer, @wendyomo_, posted.

Another, @baharakg, added: “It’s the smile at the end.”

“Watched too much Lion King,” another, @laggyserver, commented.

“He’s just showing what ‘might’ happen should you choose to get another dog,” another, @fonzzz49, wrote.

Newsweek reached out to @bentleyvthegolden for more information via email.
