Hysterics As Owner Shares Why Dachshund Is a Lot of Things, ‘But Not Smart’

Internet users can’t stop laughing after a dog owner said in a viral Reddit post that his dachshund, who is a very good boy, is also “not so smart,” and a video shared with the post may explain why.

The clip, shared on Tuesday, by Trent Smith, under the username @trashheap47, shows the pup barking at what he thinks is the bird that keeps chirping, although it is just his shadow on the wall. The real bird is enjoying the spectacle from the power cable he is chilling on.

“Bowie Dog is a lot of things—sweet, happy, very good boy—but not so smart …” Smith says in the caption. He told Newsweek that Bowie, who turns 4 on Tuesday, has “zero worries and zero thoughts,” and despite his age, he is still his “forever puppy,” who brings him and his family endless joy.

“He loves to spend all his time in the backyard hopping around like a bunny chasing lizards, butterflies, and the shadows of birds. He lives with me, my wife, his littermate brother Rory, and his sister-aunt pug Zora, and he is a constant embarrassment to both of them,” Smith said.

Despite the viral clip making Bowie look everything but smart, scientists say that all dogs are actually clever creatures in some ways. Bond Vet says on its website that dogs are about as smart as a human toddler, and they can learn on average 165 words, even though some are able to go over 250.

However, there are different types of smart when it comes to dogs, so, just because your puppy may not know many of our words or may not be the best hunter, that doesn’t mean that they are dumb; they may just be a different kind of smart.

Dogs’ intelligence can usually be divided into three main categories: instinctive, which means street smart, when your dog is a pro at hunting and doing what they were bred to do; adaptive, when they are good at problem-solving and easily adaptable to new environments; and working/obedience, when your dog is great at learning form training.

Our pups are so smart that they are not only used as guide, police, and as therapy dogs, but also they are increasingly getting involved in the medical field, too. In fact, some dogs have the extraordinary ability to sniff out medical conditions.

Some breeds are smarter than others. The American Kennel Club puts border collies on top of their list of intelligent dogs, followed by poodles, German shepherds, golden retrievers, and Doberman pinschers. Dachshunds did not made the top 20 AKC list.

The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 1,500 upticks and 32 comments on the platform.

One user, Trenchcoatangel, commented: “I have a dachshund mix also named Bowie and she is the stupidest creature I have ever encountered. She’s the best though. Just smooth brained.”

Purplebethebest posted: “This is a Dachshund super power, Doxie Transferous. You bark at the shadow, it confounds the enemy and keeps him away. It worked, thank that amazing Bowie Dog!”

EnvironmentalClue218 added: “He can get a lot closer to it there.”
