One of the most anticipated games of the entire 2024 NFL season kicks off on Monday night in Santa Clara, as the San Francisco 49ers welcome the New York Jets to Levi’s Stadium at 8:15 p.m. ET (TV: ABC, ESPN, ESPN+).
Expectations for both these teams are sky-high. While the 49ers have the second-shortest Super Bowl odds in the league behind only the Chiefs, the Jets have a high ceiling as long as Aaron Rodgers is able to stay healthy.
In fact, Rodgers’ health in 2024 is arguably the biggest “if” in the entire league. The anticipation around the Jets’ season is through the roof after his move to New York in 2023 ratcheted up expectations a year ago, only for the Jets’ 2023 season to immediately go sideways following Rodgers’ torn Achilles in the season opener.
The Niners are also interesting, both on and off the field, after public contract disputes for stars Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk, were resolved just in time for them to suit up in Week 1, overshadowed the team’s training camp.

Jets vs. 49ers Betting Preview
New York Jets Betting News, Analysis
Rodgers, 40, is the biggest name — and the biggest question mark — on this roster, but the Jets are loaded, perhaps more than many fans realize given how long it’s been since Gang Green has played in the postseason (last year made it 13 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance).
RB Breece Hall and WR Garrett Wilson are both among the best players in the league at their respective positions, especially Wilson. The Jets also did as much to upgrade their offensive line this offseason as any team in the NFL. The OL’s struggles combined with poor quarterback play by Rodgers’ backups in 2023 to wreck New York’s season, leading to a thorough revamp heading into 2024.
The Jets O-line now features a former All-Pro in ex-Cowboy Tyron Smith at left tackle, two solid ex-Ravens (guard John Simpson and tackle Morgan Moses) and two promising young former NYJ draft picks in second-year center Joe Tippmann and fourth-year right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
The pieces are in place for New York to go from awful to oustanding offensively, assuming, of course, that Rodgers can still play at a high level.
The stars of the Jets defense need no introduction. DL Quinnen Williams is dominant up front, CB Sauce Gardner won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022 and is already a two-time All-Pro, and C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams form one of the best linebacker duos in the league.
On paper, the Jets should match up well with every team in the league.
San Francisco 49ers Betting News, Analysis
The 49ers are coming off an overtime loss in Super Bowl 58 and look like the team to beat in the NFC after winning 25 of their last 34 regular-season games.
QB Brock Purdy has been outstanding running Kyle Shanahan’s offense for the last year and a half. RB Christian McCaffrey, TE George Kittle and WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk combine to make life miserable for opposing defenses, and the Niners have done a remarkable job building a defense that is also terrific.
LB Fred Warner, DE Nick Bosa and CB Charvarius Ward anchor the imposing 49ers D, but injuries could be an issue on Sunday night.
In addition to starting the season without starting LB Dre Greenlaw, the 49ers will also be without starting safety Talanoa Hufanga.
The San Francisco offense is also dealing with injuries.
McCaffrey is listed as questionable with a calf issu and guard Aaron Banks is questionable (finger). Williams and Aiyuk are healthy, but how close to 100 percent they will be is anyone’s guess after both missed almost all of training camp due their contract holdouts.
Jets vs. 49ers Prediction, Best Bets
The Jets have looked like one of the most tempting underdogs of the Week 1 slate since lines opened during the summer, and the possibility of McCaffrey being limited or missing the game makes an upset even more likely.
Few teams can contain the San Francisco offense when it’s healthy, and the Jets are one of them.
On the other side of the ball, the Niners will have their hands full with an offense that should get a massive boost from Rodgers. Is it worth mentioning that Kirk Cousins, who is also coming off a torn Achilles — albeit one he suffered almost two months after Rodgers’ injury — struggled in his Falcons debut on Sunday?
Absolutely.
Still, for at least one game, New York’s offense should benefit tremendously from the upgrade under center from last year to this year.
Give us the Jets to pull one of the biggest upsets of Week 1. But if you’re not quite sold on New York winning on the road against the best team in the NFC a year ago, that’s understandable, so we’ll throw out a NYJ spread bet as another good option.
Lastly, there’s value in the Jets’ alt team total over market given the upside for this offense.
Jets vs. 49ers Best Bets
- Jets moneyline (+175 at ESPN BET)
- Jets +3.5 (-105 at FanDuel)
- Jets Team Total Over 23.5 (+180 at DraftKings)
