John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor (NSA), surrendered himself to authorities on Friday. He was indicted for mishandling classified information by a federal grand jury.
Bolton was quiet as he entered courthouse, where he will be expected to make his first appearance before a Judge on the 18-count charge brought against him 24 hours earlier.
NBC News reported that it had seen the man who was President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor during his first term leave his home in Bethesda in a dark sport utility vehicle on Friday morning.
Just after 8:45 a.m., the former Trump aide and now critic, entered Greenbelt’s district courthouse. ET for his first court appearance.
John Bolton was indicted by a grand jury.
NBC News reported, “The indictment returned by a Grand Jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland alleges that Bolton sent sensitive documents classified Top Secret using personal email or a message application.”
The prosecution has been looking into whether Bolton retained classified material improperly after leaving the first Trump administration. He faces eight counts of transmitting national defense information, and ten counts of unlawfully retaining that information.
Indictment returned by grand jury of the U.S. District Court of Maryland alleges that Bolton sent sensitive documents classified Top Secret using his personal email account or messaging app. These documents, according to the indictment, contained intelligence on future attacks, foreign enemies and foreign policy relations.
In addition, the indictment alleges that Bolton unlawfully kept documents containing information on national defense at his home. These documents contained intelligence on the leaders of an enemy as well as information on sources and collections that were used to obtain statements about a foreign opponent.
