Kamala Harris Lists Positions Ahead of Debate, Tears Into Project 2025
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With less than 48 hours until her first debate with Donald Trump, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has launched an issues page on her website detailing various policy positions.

The page is divided into four sections titled: “Build an Opportunity Economy and Lower Costs for Families,” “Safeguard Our Fundamental Freedoms,” “Ensure Safety and Justice for All,” and “Keep America Safe, Secure and Prosperous.”

Several policies are described under each heading, and then at the bottom they are contrasted to what it calls “Trump’s Project 2025 Agenda.”

In terms of economic policy, Harris proposes various taxation, affordable housing, childcare, and consumer policies, including expanding the Child Tax Credit, raising the minimum wage, and implementing several policies to tackle anti-competitive behaviors by grocery chains, pharmaceutical companies, and corporate landlords.

She alleges that Trump, if elected, would cut taxes for the wealthy and increase the U.S. government’s debt by $5 trillion. Across his previous presidency, the national debt increased from $20 trillion to $27.8 trillion. Since then, it has increased to $35.35 trillion under Biden. She also said that Trump’s proposed tariffs on imported goods would increase costs for consumers.

In the next section, Harris details how she would block any national abortion bans, and, if Congress passed it, would sign a bill to federally protect a woman’s right to get an abortion. She also said she would expand civil rights protections to LGBTQ+ people.

She criticizes Trump for his role in overturning Roe v. Wade which allowed states to ban women from getting abortions. In some states, the procedure is banned from conception with no exceptions. Trump intends to allow each of the 50 states to choose whether or not to ban abortions. He also has promised, on day one of his presidency, to repeal the law which prevents schools from discriminating against LGBTQ+ students.

In the next section, Harris details that she will ban assault weapons and implement universal background checks for gun owners to prevent mass shootings. A similar law was implemented by Bill Clinton in 1994 with the endorsement of Ronald Reagan. Between 1994 and 2004, the law was associated with a marked decrease in mass shootings.

Harris says she will bring back the border security bill which Republican senators voted down earlier this year. She also says she will impose term limits and an ethics code for the Supreme Court.

Conversely, she criticizes Trump for his criminal conviction, alleging that he would abuse the powers of the presidency to advance his own interests, do nothing to prevent gun violence, and would bring back cruel immigration policies like separating children from parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

She also says she will continue to strengthen the NATO alliance and will stand up to China and Russia.

The policy list comes after weeks of criticism that her campaign lacks substance. Harris has done only one interview, while Trump has done several, as well as numerous other public appearances.

Harris characterizing Trump’s platform as a “Project 2025 Agenda” comes as part of a broader attempt by the Democratic Party to tie Trump to the controversial policy proposals.

Created by right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 is a 900-page document of proposed policies for a future Republican administration.

Trump has denounced Project 2025 as having “nothing to do with him.” However, many of its contributors are former members of his administration, and his own platform, called Agenda 47, shares broad policy similarities on several issues.

The candidates are scheduled to clash for the first time in the presidential debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Newsweek has contacted Trump’s campaign for comment via email outside working hours.
