Kari Lake Handed Bad Sign as Poll Shows Her Down Double Digits
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake is being crushed by her Democratic opponent in Arizona, according to the results of a new poll.

A Fox News poll released on Wednesday finds Congressman Ruben Gallego leading Lake by 15 points in November’s contest to replace independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema, who is not seeking reelection.

The poll, which was the second to show the Republican with a double-digit deficit this month, indicates that 56 percent of Arizona voters prefer Gallego over Lake, who was supported by 41 percent. Just 1 percent of voters were undecided, while the other 2 percent said they would vote for another candidate or would not vote.

In the same poll, former President Donald Trump is trailing Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris by just 1 point. The result suggests that Lake, a staunch supporter of Trump and his false “stolen” election claims, is far less popular in her home state than the ex-president.

The Fox News poll was jointly conducted by two different polling firms, one aligned with Republicans and the other with Democrats. The survey sampled 1,014 registered Arizona voters from August 23 to August 26 over the phone, by text message and online. It has a 3 percent margin of error.

Newsweek reached out for comment to the Lake campaign via email on Wednesday night.

A poll released by HighGround Public Affairs earlier this month showed Lake losing to Gallego by an 11 percent margin. Other surveys taken this month have shown Gallego leading by a smaller margin, although one poll sponsored by Republicans showed the race even.

In response to a request for comment on the poll showing the Republican down by 11 points, a Lake spokesperson previously told Newsweek, “If you believe Kari Lake is down 11 points, you are as dumb as we thought.”

During an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt on Sunday, Lake dismissed what she claimed are “absurd partisan polls” showing her losing to Gallego while touting her own unspecified “internal polling” as evidence that she is ahead.

However, only two public polls of the Arizona Senate race from this month can reasonably be described as “partisan:” The poll showing her level with Gallego, which was sponsored by the National Republican Senate Committee, and a poll conducted by pro-Lake super PAC Club for Growth, which showed her 2 points behind.

Earlier this week, the Arizona Police Association, that state’s biggest police association, announced that it was endorsing Gallego just days after its president delivered an in-person endorsement of Trump at a Phoenix-area rally that also featured Lake.

Lake lost the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election to Democrat Katie Hobbs by a slim 49.7 percent to 50.3 percent margin. Like Trump, she claimed that the contest had been “rigged” after losing and launched a series of failed legal challenges attempting to reverse the outcome.
