Liz Cheney Tells Anti-Abortion Conservatives to Support Kamala Harris
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Republican Liz Cheney has called on anti-abortion voters to support Vice President Kamala Harris, despite her liberal stance on abortion rights.

The former Wyoming representative, who has been campaigning alongside the Democratic presidential nominee this election, said the issue needed “compassion” and that former President Donald Trump would not be able to handle it.

Speaking in Wisconsin with Harris on Monday, Cheney said: “I’m pro-life, and I have been very troubled, deeply troubled by what I have watched happen in so many states since Dobbs.

“I have been troubled by the extent to which you have women who—as the vice president said—in some cases have died, who can’t get medical treatment that they need because providers are worried about criminal liability.”

Cheney continued: “Even if you are pro-life, as I am, I do not believe, for example, that the state of Texas ought to have the right, as they’re currently suing to do, to get access to women’s medical records.

“There are some very fundamental and fundamentally dangerous things that have happened, and so I think that it’s crucially important for us to find ways to have the federal government play a role and protect women from some of the worst harms that we’re seeing.”

What Is Kamala Harris’ Abortion Policy?

Harris has been a strong advocate for more liberal abortion policies throughout her political career, dating back to her time as California’s attorney general and later as the state’s junior senator.

The vice president opposes federal bans on abortion and described the rolling back of Roe v. Wade as “horrifying.” She has said her administration would focus on restoring Roe as codified law and has even floated the possibility of abolishing the filibuster in Congress to get it passed.

What Is Donald Trump’s Abortion Policy?

Though he initially took credit for the abolition of Roe v. Wade, Trump has significantly scaled back his campaign’s rhetoric on abortion rights after disappointing midterm elections for Republicans.

The former president has said that the issue is one of states’ rights and that he supports legislation allowing individual states to decide abortion policy themselves.

Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, has said Trump would veto a national abortion ban if Congress sent one to his desk.

In a Truth Social post earlier this month, the former president wrote: “EVERYONE KNOWS I WOULD NOT SUPPORT A FEDERAL ABORTION BAN, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, AND WOULD, IN FACT, VETO IT, BECAUSE IT IS UP TO THE STATES TO DECIDE BASED ON THE WILL OF THEIR VOTERS (THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE!). LIKE RONALD REAGAN BEFORE ME, I FULLY SUPPORT THE THREE EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE, INCEST, AND THE LIFE OF THE MOTHER.”

Did Dick Cheney Endorse Kamala Harris?

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the most prominent Republicans in the country, has said he will vote for Harris in November.

His daughter Liz Cheney made the announcement in September, saying at an event in Texas, “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris.”

In a statement released shortly afterward, the former vice president confirmed his voting plans: “In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.

“He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.

“As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
