You can always count on your friends to know—and use—your deepest fears.

A video posted to TikTok by DYLVN (@thisisdylvn) has gone viral after he and his friends pranked their bandmate, Jamie, with a rose petalled bed to greet him after a date. Since the video was posted on September 20, it has received over two million views. DYLVN, 26, spoke to Newsweek about how the idea for the prank came about, and the other antics he and his friends are getting up to while on tour.

“We set up our friend’s bed in case he came back with his date,” DYLVN captioned the video.

DYLVN told Newsweek that he is a solo artist currently playing free shows around the U.S. with a band. On the band’s day off in Florida, his bandmate and friend, Jamie, decided to go on a date. With only DYLVN and his guitarist friend trying to fill their evening, their minds began to wander.

“Me and my buddy Matt were scrolling through Netflix trying to figure out what to watch at night, and kept asking each other how we thought the date was going,” DYLVN said. “I then asked him how funny it’d be if we put roses leading up to the bed in case he came home with her.”

It was Matt who came up with the almost-exact phrase: “Will you be my girlfriend?” The two instantly got to work on the prank with two other friends and headed to Walmart.

They meant to grab some fake rose petals but ended up finding a dozen real roses in the produce section—and they opted for authenticity instead.

“We got home and started plucking all the roses,” DYLVN said. “The Airbnb we were in had Christmas lights for some reason or design in their house, so we used those too.”

They had the set-up complete, with the video recorded, when DYLVN and his friends noticed something critical: they had forgotten a word in the phrase they wrote with rose petals.

“When I went to take the video, we all watched it after and realized we had forgotten the word ‘my’ and we lost it,” he said. “Could not stop laughing. We decided to leave it as is because we thought it was hilarious.”

In the end, the friends’ efforts were not met with the intended audience. Jamie came home by himself a couple of hours later, sharing chuckles but no embarrassment.

DYLVN said that while he and his friends have never done anything like this before, they love joking around with each other and vow not to take life too seriously.

“Every day there’s something funny that goes on with us, just living life and bouncing off each other’s sense of humor,” he said.
