Tariffs and trade are likely to be the main topics. Modi’s trip comes on the same day that Mr. Trump approved his administration’s decision to impose reciprocal tariffs against imports from countries that impose higher U.S. tariffs, and the increased tariffs that the president has imposed on steel and aluminium imports will go into effect in the next month. Trump had said that there would be no exemptions or exceptions to his plan for any countries before Modi’s trip.
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Indian government, India is India’s biggest trading partner. The United States is India’s 10th largest trading partner.
On Thursday, Mr. Trump said that India charged more tariffs than other countries. He added that the U.S. would impose whatever tariffs India charges the U.S.
Last year, Donald Trump called India, which is the world’s most populous nation, a “big tax abuser”.
Modi, who met with Elon Musk separately before meeting Mr. Trump on Thursday, posted photos of his visit.
During his first tenure, Mr. Trump enjoyed a good relationship with Modi. He was warmly welcomed by the Indians when he visited India in 2020 . The strength of their relationship could be determined by whether the president intends to exempt India from any tariffs.
The President and Modi will meet in the Oval Office, before holding a press conference together later that afternoon.
