The Baltimore Ravens lost 27-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs by inches in Thursday’s night Week 1 opener.

More news: Ravens TE Isaiah Likely Shades Chiefs Following Season Opener Loss

It was the first game of the NFL season, but the loss was no less heartbreaking for a team that is 1-5 against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Lamar Jackson threw a bullet to Isaiah Likely in the back of the end zone as time ran out. Likely caught the pass for a last-second touchdown and the Ravens prepared for a potential game-winning 2-point conversion.

Baltimore could practically taste a win as the score changed to 27-26 and all the Ravens needed to clinch the game was a 2-point conversion.

“The ref looked at me, I look at the ref, and when he signaled touchdown, I thought it was what it was,” Likely said to reporters, via Jamison Henley of ESPN. “Then, obviously we were going to win the game.”

Following a review of the play, officials ruled that Likely’s right toe was out of bounds on the final-second touchdown.

Social media immediately exploded with people highlighting Likely’s black cleat on the white out-of-bounds line. At that point, it was practically undeniable.

“I thought it was a touchdown,” Jackson said. “I still think it’s a touchdown.”

The Ravens social media team thought so, too.

The Ravens posted a video of the play with the caption, “TOUCHDOWN OMG” and a bunch of exclamation marks.

While that play ended up being called back, the tweet stayed up. Twitter‘s community notes got the last laugh with a note on the video that says, “No, it wasn’t.”

After the official ruling, the Chiefs earned their first win of the season as Kansas City hunts down a three-peat Super Bowl title.

“The runner’s toe hit out of bounds,” referee Shawn Hochuli announced. “It’s an incomplete pass. The game is over. Kansas City has won.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said his coaching staff confirmed that the Ravens tight end was on the white out-of-bounds line at the back of the end zone.

“The guys upstairs saw it, and so they knew he was out,” Reid said. “We were just waiting after that.”

Although this is only the first game of the season, it was an AFC championship rematch. The Ravens were hoping for redemption, but instead, once again found themselves defeated by the Kansas City dynasty.

“At this point, you just have to live with the call,” Likely said. “You have to look on, obviously watch the film, see where we can get better to not put ourselves in the situation to leave it in the refs’ hands to be able to call that.”

The Ravens couldn’t pull of the upset at Arrowhead Stadium Thursday night, but the nail-biting contest set the tone for the 2024 season.
