The Pittsburgh Steelers are starting to look like a strong team in the AFC. The team is currently 3-0, and is playing complementary football that has led to an undefeated start.

What makes their start even more interesting is that Justin Fields has been the starting quarterback leading the offense through three weeks of action. Before the season began, head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Russell Wilson was the starter. However, a calf injury has kept him from suiting up.

Fields was adamant about obtaining and keeping the starting quarterback position, and that has happened through three weeks and three wins. Now, it appears the team is ready to roll with Fields as the starter for Week 4 as well.

According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, “#Steelers HC Mike Tomlin implied that Justin Fields will once again be the starter this week vs. the #Colts. Russell Wilson will be limited to start the week. Shouldn’t come as a surprise. Virtually impossible to take Fields off the field right now.”

Tomlin spoke to reporters and implied that Fields is set to be the starter for Week 4 based on the still-injured Wilson. But just like Meirov, it is believed that the Steelers should not move off Fields until he starts losing.

Fields began the season a bit slow, as the Steelers’ first win against the Atlanta Falcons saw him post 156 yards on 17-for-23 attempts. Those stats are nothing to be impressed with.

In Week 2, Fields threw his first touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos, ending the win with 117 yards on 13-for-30 attempts with one touchdown. Again, Fields’ stats were not necessarily MVP-worthy.

It wasn’t until Week 3 that Fields truly emerged against a tough Los Angeles Chargers defense. Fields led the Steelers to a decisive 20-10 win, throwing 245 yards, one touchdown, and one interception on 25-for-32 attempts.

Fields is nowhere near impressive in total yardage through the air, but he has been impressive in his accuracy. He is currently No. 6 in the NFL with a 73.3 completion percentage.

The Steelers are undefeated and though it’s unclear if the Falcons and Broncos are quality teams, the Chargers definitely are. Many believed that the Chargers were set to trounce Pittsburgh, but Fields showcased elite skill during the game.

Wilson is still hurt, but if and when he gets healthy — Fields should remain the starter of this team. The Steelers fell into a great situation when Wilson signed through free agency and Fields was traded for.

The decision was a sneaky good one by Steelers general manager Omar Khan. Though it’s unclear if the plan was to test out Wilson to see if his issues in Denver followed him to Pittsburgh, the situation has all but worked itself out in a way that has led to Fields starting.

For the Steelers and Tomlin, the decision to keep Fields in should be an easy one. Even if Wilson can finally suit up by Week 5.
