Reports say that protests erupted across Iran Monday, as demonstrators clashed with security forces in Tehran, Mashhad and other cities. Authorities used tear gas to disperse the crowds and sparked street fights.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (an Iranian opposition group) reported that large numbers of demonstrators marched down Jomhouri Street in Tehran before moving on to other areas such as Naser Khosrow Street or Istanbul Square.
The central parts of Tehran became flashpoints when protesters and security forces clashed with each other in the streets near government and commercial areas.
According to eyewitnesses, police units used tear gas and batons to disperse crowds in the center of the city.

Shops in Iran’s major commercial centers, including Tehran’s Grand Bazaar and Istanbul Square, were closed as a result of nationwide strikes and protests. Demonstrators shouted anti-government slogans, calling for the fall of the ruling clergy and demanding that the leadership step down.
The Iranian currency has plunged to record lows.
The protests on Monday were the largest since 2022.
Iran’s biggest protests in the last three years broke out Monday, after the currency of the country plummeted down to a new record low against the U.S. Dollar and the Central Bank head resigned.
State TV announced the resignation of Mohammad Reza Farzin. Traders and shopkeepers also rallied on Saadi Street, in the heart of Tehran, as well as the Shush district near the Grand Bazaar. The market’s traders played a key role in the Islamic Revolution of 1979 that brought Islamists and the monarchy to power.

The protests on Monday were the largest since 2022 when the death in police custody of Mahsa Jia Amini, 22, sparked nationwide demonstrations. She was arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly by the morality police.

On Sunday, the Iranian rial plunged to 1,42 million dollars. On Monday, the rial traded at 1,38 million per dollar.
