According to Reuters, this is the first step of a larger deportation plan that will involve approximately 400 Iranians.
This deal represents a rare example of cooperation between Tehran, Iran and Washington. Tensions were high after the summer strikes against Iran’s nuclear sites. The Times reported that Iranian officials said the deal on deportation was the result of months of talks between the two countries.
Washington and Tehran are unlikely to work together but the agreement is in line with President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. According to reports, earlier this year the administration deported migrants to Panama from a number of countries, including Iran. This was done under a separate deal.
The flight was scheduled to arrive in Qatar by Tuesday.
He said that the first 120 people would arrive in Iran within one or two days.
The New York Times reported on Monday that a U.S. chartered flight left Louisiana and was due to arrive in Iran by way of Qatar on Tuesday.
The newspaper reported that some Iranians had offered to leave detention centers after months of being there, while others had not.
