Documents newly declassified reveal that Hillary Clinton, a twice-failed presidential hopeful, endorsed a campaign strategy devised to “smear”, then-candidate Donald Trump by making unfounded accusations of Russian involvement in order to divert attention away from her own email scandal during the 2016 election.
The strategy was to “raise the theme of Putin’s support for Trump” and “then steer public opinion towards the notion that they need to equate” real electoral infrastructure tampering efforts with the Russian leader’s political influence effort.
One of the declassified documents stated that Clinton approved a plan by Julianne Smith, one of her advisors on foreign policy, to “smear Donald Trump, by magnifying scandals related to the Russian spying in the pre-election campaign to benefit the Republican Candidate.”
John Durham, Special Counsel, discovered the information after a multiyear investigation of intelligence operations related to 2016’s election.
