Vet Covering Sick Dog’s Medical Bills Goes Viral, Then Internet Helps Out

A veterinarian recently revealed the incredible way social media came together to cover the cost of a dog’s complicated medical treatment, and without their help, the dog wouldn’t have made it through.

As the owner of Compassionate Care Animal Hospital, veterinarian Dr. Michele Forbes has treated animals for all kinds of malaise, but none more memorable than Bonnie, a sick dog who came to her clinic in August. Bonnie’s owner called Forbes saying her pup was unwell, and she’d called almost 30 clinics in the area, but they all rejected her because she couldn’t afford the diagnostics or treatment.

It was clear that Bonnie’s vet bills would be extensive, but Forbes, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, told Newsweek that she “just could not say no.” She couldn’t bear the thought of Bonnie continuing to deteriorate and her owner feeling helpless, so Forbes met with them at her nonprofit organization, Spirit’s Legacy Fund, during the weekend and offered to cover some of the costs.

“It was stressful to make this decision as I do not have a large nonprofit. My annual budget for the nonprofit is less than the cost of just Bonnie’s care alone,” she said.

Bonnie was vomiting, refusing to eat, had a fever of 104, and was listless. So, Forbes and her team hospitalized the pup, did bloodwork diagnostics, exploratory surgery, an ultrasound, and gave her medication. In total, Bonnie was hospitalized from the Sunday until the following Thursday, with her bills costing approximately $8,500.

While Bonnie was in her care, Forbes took to TikTok (@drforbeez) to share the heartbreaking story and hoped that enough users would engage with her clip to generate some money on TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program. This initiative requires content to be original, at least a minute long, and have at least 1,000 qualified For You feed views.

But what she discovered the next day was far greater than she could have even imagined.

“I went to social media thinking that I could earn a little money to cover the cost of the ER visit I agreed to pay for. But I was absolutely stunned when donations actually started coming in. Everyone who donated saved Bonnie’s life because we were able to provide all the care she needed,” Forbes told Newsweek. “The response to this story has restored my faith in humans and given me insight into how many people feel. There is a lot of good out there and people who genuinely care. I cannot express enough gratitude for the support and generosity.”

Not only did Bonnie’s story go viral, with over 4.2 million views at the time of writing, but it encouraged TikTok users to donate their own money too. Through their help, Forbes says they earned enough money to pay for all of Bonnie’s care.

While they couldn’t diagnose the cause for Bonnie’s illness, she was still able to make a full recovery, and Forbes says she’s now “living her best life” back at home.

“It’s so frustrating that we didn’t get an answer for her condition, but she would have likely died without this help. The family had no funds left to help her and she was very sick,” Forbes added.

Following the success of her initial post about Bonnie, Forbes shared another video to thank the social media users who donated, which also showed the moment Bonnie was reunited with her owner. As so many people were gripped by her story and wanted to see her recover, the latter video also went viral with over 247,000 views and 61,800 likes on TikTok.

Forbes remains astounded by their generosity, and it’s even led to far more inquiries at her animal hospital. So much so, she’s struggling to keep up with demand.

“There are some very difficult moments as a veterinarian, and I am particularly stressed watching pet parents struggle with the cost of care. I believe that all people should have access to pets and care – not just the wealthy. But the online reaction to this story has been overwhelming in a great way,” Forbes said. “Truly, I am so incredibly grateful. I have already helped more families this past week.”

TikTok Users React

The video revealing how the internet stepped up to pay for Bonnie’s care has amassed over 4,000 comments on TikTok so far.

One TikTok user wrote: “Bonnie is such a beautiful angel, and so are you, your team, and her mom.”

Another user wrote: “What you did was simply amazing, you gave all of us hope and belief that people are genuinely kind and caring.”

“You are an amazing human being, and I’m so glad that Bonnie is doing well,” added a third.

While another user wrote: “Thank you for helping them. Thanks also to the people who donated!”
