Water Pistol Gender Reveal Ends in Tears for Older Sibling: ‘Not Happy’

An expectant couple’s gender reveal took a hilarious turn after their young son reacted badly to the results.

When Venus Kuchling from Missouri started recording a video of her daughter Destyni and son-in-law Anthony’s gender reveal, she was expecting to capture a heartwarming family moment.

However, her grandson, Rhett, who was front and center during proceedings, had other ideas after discovering he would be getting a sister rather than a brother. What followed was adorable and entirely predictable.

Like pineapple on a pizza or the correct pronunciation of the word “Gif”, gender-reveal parties appear to be one of those things Americans are firmly divided on.

In a YouGov poll of 1.2 million U.S. adults, 25 percent of respondents said they considered them to be “fun”, with 20 percent even going as far as to brand the practice as “joyous.” Not everyone was sold on the idea, though, with 35 percent of those answering the poll describing the practice as “unnecessary.”

Rhett had been very much in favor of his parents’ gender reveal and the idea of welcoming a new addition to the family. Destyni told Newsweek: “When we first told him that he was going to be a big brother, his first reaction was ‘so I’m going to have a new best friend!’ He was so excited that mommy had a baby in her belly.”

That’s why they ended up revealing the gender using water guns. “We wanted to do something that would involve Rhett and make him feel included,” Destyni said.

The idea was simple enough: Rhett would open fire on his mom and dad with the water pistol, which contained water dyed the color blue or pink depending on the baby’s gender. Once the colored water appeared on his parents’ clothes, everyone would know if they were having a girl or boy.

Kuchling said most of the family was there to mark the occasion. But things quickly went awry when Rhett fired the water pistol at his mom and dad, revealing a stream of pink liquid in the process. That was bad news in Rhett’s eyes. “He really wanted a baby brother, not a baby sister,” Kuchling said.

Rhett wasn’t shy about letting his feelings be known either. In a video posted to Kuchling’s TikTok account venus.jeff he can be seen stomping his feet while shouting: “I wanted it to be a boy.”

He briefly storms off, shouting “no!” before returning to reiterate that he “wanted a boy.” Destyni said: “He wanted a brother because he wants someone that can play with him.”

It is a familiar enough reaction among siblings and one that both those in attendance and those watching on TikTok found amusing enough. “Aww! He’s upset now, but wait until she’s here. He’s going to turn into the most protective, loving big brother!” one user wrote.

“Awe poor Rhett, he is going to be the best big brother though,” another posted.

Thankfully, Rhett has had a change of heart since that initial response. “It’s been a few weeks now, and he has definitely settled into having a sister, and he’s super excited,” Kuchling said.

His little sister is due to arrive in December, and grandma can’t wait. “My hubby and I are SO excited for a granddaughter,” she said. “She’s the first granddaughter. We have two other grandsons, one with this family and one through another child. This will be their last.

“I really wanted my daughter to experience the relationship between a mother and daughter. It’s so different from a mother and son.”
