Austin Tran, a valedictorian at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Wichita, Kansas, recently had his valedictorian medal revoked after delivering a graduation speech that deviated from the pre-approved script. The school’s decision has sparked controversy, with many arguing that the punishment was too severe.

Tran’s speech was meant to reflect his personal journey and experiences, but he felt the approved version lacked authenticity. As a result, he rewrote his speech the night before graduation to better express his thoughts. His revised speech was non-political and well-received by his classmates and attendees.

Despite the positive reception, the school administration demanded that Tran return his valedictorian medal in exchange for his diploma and transcripts. His family, who were traveling abroad at the time, were not consulted before the decision was made. They have since stated that they hope the school will reconsider its stance.

The incident has led to an outpouring of support for Tran, with many students, parents, and alumni expressing disappointment in the school’s actions. A Change.org petition calling for the school to reinstate Tran’s valedictorian status has gathered thousands of signatures.

Some former students even left their own valedictorian medals at the school as a symbolic protest against the administration’s decision. Many argue that Tran’s speech was respectful and heartfelt, and that punishing him for expressing himself sets a dangerous precedent for student speech.

The Catholic Diocese of Wichita has declined to comment on the matter, referring all media inquiries back to the school. Meanwhile, Tran’s mother has publicly praised her son for his hard work and integrity, encouraging him to continue inspiring others.

Tran’s speech included shout-outs to fellow students and his parents, which were not part of the pre-approved version. He also included a lighthearted joke about a bishop falling asleep during the ceremony, which the school had previously edited out.

Before delivering his speech, Tran was warned by administrators that he would be removed from the stage if he strayed from the approved version. However, he stood his ground, believing that his words were important and meaningful to his classmates.

The controversy surrounding Tran’s speech has raised questions about free speech in academic settings. Many believe that schools should encourage students to express themselves, rather than punish them for speaking from the heart.

As the debate continues, supporters hope that Bishop Carroll Catholic High School will reverse its decision and allow Tran to keep his valedictorian medal. Whether the school will reconsider remains to be seen, but the incident has already sparked a larger conversation about student rights and academic freedom
