A woman has sparked debate online after using Reddit as a mechanism to tell her husband that she plans to divorce him.
The woman, who goes by u/hot-flan-8325 on the platform, posted an open letter, which detailed years of mistreatment and neglect at the hands of husband Steffan, on August 26. It has since garnered 74,000 upvotes and ignited a fervent discussion among viewers online. The woman updated her post, at a date and time concealed from users, to inform viewers that Steffan has seen her open letter and deleted his account due to fears of doxing.
“Hi Steffan, maybe you will finally listen,” the woman wrote. “And if you’re wondering if you can just speed home and stop me from doing this and leaving, it’s too late. I’m sending you this after I’ve already loaded the car and left.”
The woman, a 29-year-old who is five months pregnant, went on to outline a series of grievances against her 35-year-old husband, detailing their tumultuous ten-year relationship and five-year marriage.
The post reveals a litany of issues, beginning with the woman’s contentious relationship with her mother-in-law, who she describes as a nightmare. From wearing white to their wedding under the guise of a “family tradition” to openly criticizing her appearance and destroying sentimental belongings, the mother-in-law’s actions reportedly went unchecked by Steffan, who she says failed to defend her.
The situation worsened with Steffan’s habitual absence and misplaced priorities. He is accused of neglecting his responsibilities as a husband, prioritizing Reddit over their relationship, and forgetting significant dates and events in her life. The final straw, as described in the post, came with Steffan’s nonchalant reaction to his mother’s intentions to impose her disciplinary beliefs on their unborn daughter and his absence during an ultrasound appointment.
“My mother-in-law started making comments about how she’ll have to ‘whip the girl into shape’ and how she’ll raise her to be ‘tough’ because I’m ‘too soft’,” she said.
The woman’s decision to leave was solidified when Steffan dismissed her concerns, suggesting that they let his mother babysit their daughter.
Dr. Carole Lieberman, a forensic psychiatrist based in Beverly Hills, California weighed in on the situation in a conversation with Newsweek.
“This does seem like a nightmare—and not the kind of peaceful environment you need when you’re pregnant,” Lieberman said.
She noted the deep-seated issues stemming from the mother-in-law’s jealousy and Steffan’s lack of support, as well as the implications of their age difference, which placed the woman at a disadvantage early in their relationship.
After reaching her breaking point, the woman decided to leave Steffan, taking her name off their lease and setting up a direct deposit for the next month’s rent before departing.
“If he wouldn’t stand up for me, how could I expect him to stand up for our child?” she asked viewers.
“What’s more upsetting is how her husband doesn’t stick up for her and try to ease any tension between the two of them,” Lieberman said.
The psychiatrist advised that one solution, if the couple wanted to try and work things out, could be to move away from the mother-in-law. Though, she acknowledged that this might not seem acceptable to Steffan.
As the woman’s open letter continues to gain significant attention across the internet, many viewers commiserated with her plight, offering words of encouragement.
“10/10 OP,” one viewer commented. “I wish you well in your new life.”
“Hope Steffan and mommy-wife are eternally trapped with each other,” another added. “She failed raising her son into a complete autonomous human and would have tried to damage your daughter.
“He would have let her.”
The woman had made clear that her husband is an avid Reddit user, and added that he had used the platform to further disrespect their relationship.
“He’s always on Reddit, constantly giving strangers relationship advice, which is laughable considering how he treats me,” she said. “He spends more time rating women’s boobs on Reddit than talking to me.”
In concluding her message to Steffan, the woman expressed a clear resolve: “So, Steffan, I wish you all the best in your future marriage—with your mother and the women of Reddit whose boobs you don’t even deserve.”
