‘Wordle’ #1,179 Answer, Clues and Hints for Tuesday, September 10 Game

While Wordle is easy to play, that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to solve.

This is where Newsweek comes in, as we have put together five hints to help you figure out Tuesday’s answer.

Created by software engineer Josh Wardle, Wordle started as a fun project during the COVID-19 pandemic as he wanted to create a puzzle “for me and my partner to enjoy.”

The game was released to the public in October 2021, after which it quickly developed into a global sensation, with many players sharing their results on social media each day. In January 2022, The New York Times purchased Wordle for a seven-figure sum.

Much of Wordle‘s appeal lies in its simplicity. Players have six chances to guess the daily five-letter word and feedback is given to help nail it down via a color-coded system.

A green tile means the letter is correct, while yellow tells a player that the letter appears in the word but is just in the wrong spot. A gray tile indicates that the letter is not in the word at all.

In a previous interview with Newsweek, Erhan Aslan, who teaches applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, offered some advice for Wordle players.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen. Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful,” he said.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”

The answer to today’s Wordle is “rebel.”

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the adjective is defined as “opposing or taking arms against a government or ruler” and the noun is defined as “one who rebels or participates in a rebellion.” The verb definition is “to oppose or disobey one in authority or control.”

Congratulations if you got it right, but don’t worry if you didn’t. Wordle updates every day at midnight in your local time zone. Newsweek will be back with another round of hints and tips for each new game.

Players who would like something to keep themselves busy while they wait can have a go at Connections, another word-based game run by The New York Times.
