New York Giants rookie fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. suffered a non-contact injury at practice on Tuesday and was carted off the field in an air cast.
Tracy muffed a kickoff, and when he went down to pick it up, his leg buckled and he went to the ground in pain. The Giants officially announced it as an ankle injury, and said that Tracy was going to the Hospital for Special Surgery for further imaging and a more comprehensive evaluation.

The Giants selected Tracy with the No. 166 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old spent six years in college — four at Iowa and two at Purdue. After his senior season as Purdue in which he rushed for 716 and eight touchdowns, he was on the Giants’ radar, and quickly made a name for himself at camp.
Tracy made his preseason debut in the Giants’ first game, rushing five times for 26 yards. He was listed as the No. 2 running back on the unofficial depth chart behind Devin Singletary, and was making a serious case to play a big role in the Giants’ offense this season. Now, he’ll have to hope the injury isn’t as severe as it looked on the practice field.
With the injury to Tracy, Eric Gray, Dante Miller, and Lorenzo Lingard will compete for the backup running back spot behind Singletary. It’s a very different running back room for the Giants after two-time Pro Bowler Saquon Barkley left in free agency to sign with the division rival Philadelphia Eagles.
Singletary is the only known commodity in the New York backfield, and he’s coming off his most productive season in the NFL when he rushed 216 times for 898 yards and four touchdowns with the Houston Texans last year. Prior to the 2023 season with Houston, Singletary spent the first four years of his career with the Buffalo Bills.
Malik Nabers Injury Update
Another Giants rookie has been dealing with an injury, as first-round pick Malik Nabers suffered an ankle injury in a practice over the weekend.
Nabers spoke to reporters on Tuesday and said he’s feeling good with no pain in his ankle. He also said he has “no doubt” he’ll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters that Nabers won’t practice on Tuesday, but that he’s not dealing with a long-term injury.
