Food isn’t usually frightening, but after a woman’s dinner gurgled and sputtered, she couldn’t help but be horrified—and point the finger.
A video posted to TikTok by Jess (@messicaisajessica) has gone viral after she revealed the slow cooker dinner her mother was cooking instead of her father, who usually cooks. Inside the cooker was a congealed concoction of meat and vegetables, making Jess gasp in shock. Since the video was posted, it has received 8.8 million views and 798,000 likes.
“Mom cooked instead of dad,” she captioned the video. “Homemade meals…also why’d it jump at me like that?”
Viewers were horrified alongside Jess in her discovery of the animate crock pot meal: “Happy to say both my parents cook very well, but I wish you luck soldier,” @glutenfreejello wrote.
“First time I’ve ever been afraid of a crock pot meal,” @sleepysneezing wrote.
“That’s only acceptable if it’s frozen and needs to get heated up,” @trinketsformymagpie wrote. “Otherwise, I hope you’re okay.”
Meanwhile, others had similar experiences to share—though not always with the same family dynamics.
“I’m so glad both of my parents can cook,” @creetale._ wrote. “However this is one hundred percent my nan (she gave me food poisoning with mushrooms. How do you poison mushrooms?)”
“Reminds me of when my dad cooked, that one time, when mum was in hospital,” @mrprobie wrote. “I took over after that, at 11 years old.”
“I also came from a family where dad was the cook and mum was not. I don’t think she had any disasters this atrocious. but growing up some of her regular dishes felt like this to me,” @bohemelavie wrote.
Some were less sympathetic: “Just stir it up and serve over rice! Some people don’t get home cooked meals from mom,” @leejay346 wrote.
Jess took to TikTok several times since her video went viral to give viewers updates. In one, she revealed a concoction of her own, captioning the video, “like mother, like daughter”. The video shows a non-descript food in a bowl, with some spread on toast. On top of the toast were chopped raw tomatoes, and on the side were raw peppers.
In another video, Jess revealed the recipe behind her own variety of “mush”.
“How to make my favorite mush,” she said in the beginning of the video. With two tins of canned chicken and cottage cheese, Jess concocted the spread on toast while laughing at herself.
In yet another video, she reflected on how she would tell her mother that her original video had gone so viral.
“Did not expect the video to blow up as much as it did,” she captioned the video. “Mom and I are besties, so it’ll probably be fine, but if I go silent you know what happened to me.”
