After finding out he’s going to become a grandfather next year, one man flew across the country to fulfill a wish that his daughter held since she was younger—and it’s left the internet sobbing.
Makenzie Walters and her husband, Tyler, of Orange County, California, are expecting a baby girl in January 2025. They certainly can’t wait to become parents, but Walters’ parents also can’t wait to become grandparents for the first time.
Throughout her childhood, Walters recalls the murals her father, Mark Hendron, 55, painted in her and her siblings’ bedrooms. They provided so many cherished memories, and she told Newsweek that she “always knew [she] wanted him to paint a mural” for his grandbaby one day.
Once the pregnancy was announced, Hendron got on a plane from Delaware and flew to California to ensure he made his daughter’s wish come true.

“Having a dad as incredible as mine is truly a gift that I am beyond thankful for. Not only is he an amazing dad, but he is also an extraordinarily talented artist,” Walters said.
“My dad and I are truly two peas in a pod, so when he said he’d paint the mural, I was not surprised at all. My dad would do anything for me and my siblings, as he has our whole entire lives.”
Hendron flew to his daughter’s home in September to begin the mural in his soon-to-be granddaughter’s nursery. The detailed and thoughtful artwork has a woodland theme with hot air balloons, as Walters and her husband met at a woodland inspired festival several years ago.
For nine consecutive days, Hendron worked for at least 10 hours a day to bring the design together. Although it’s not yet complete, and he plans to return in October to finish it, Walters couldn’t be happier with his masterpiece.
She said: “We simply told him that we wanted a woodland themed mural that incorporated hot air balloons, and then we gave him full creative freedom because we knew he would create something breathtaking, and we were right.
“Every time I walk past the nursery and see it, I’m reminded of the love my dad has for me and my family. Yes, it’s for his granddaughter, but let’s be honest, she may not remember the mural as she grows up, but I certainly will. My husband and I will always know how much effort, time, and love was put into this work of art. It was truly a labor of love.”
It can be hard to live over 2,800 miles away from her family, requiring a flight of more than five hours anytime Walters wishes to see her parents. But with this gesture, Hendron showed that no amount of distance would stop him from being present for his granddaughter.
The mural serves as a permanent reminder to Walters, as she told Newsweek that the nursery is now “the most special room” in her home. She can feel her dad with her every day now, and she’s so thankful that her daughter will grow up surrounded by so much love.
“He is just so excited about having a grandchild. He’s really looking forward to spending a lot of time with her doing all of the fun things he did with myself and my brothers as kids, without having to worry about the parenting part.”

The Social Media Reaction
After seeing the artwork come together, Walters couldn’t wait to post about having “the best dad” on social media. She shared a video on TikTok (@makenzieewalters) showing the progress he’s made so far, and the work he’s put into it.
The video went viral, generating over 6.9 million views and more than 1.4 million likes on TikTok in just a number of days. Walters had received an overwhelmingly positive response to her video, as her dad’s kindness has melted millions of hearts online.
“I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing it is for the whole world to see my dad’s artwork and get the appreciation it has always deserved,” Walters said. “My dad has been an artist for most of his life, and this is the most his artwork has been able to be viewed, and I am just so thankful so many people get to witness his talent.
“My dad will be releasing a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book in the near future and all I can say is, if you loved the mural you will be blown away by his book.”
Since going viral, the TikTok post has captured plenty of attention and amassed more than 7,900 comments already.
