Rescue Dog Singing His Heart Out to Classical Tune Wins Pet of the Week
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

This week we’ve seen the gentle way a blind cat rushes to greet her owner and a senior rescue dog who now stays glued to his adopter 24/7.

We’ve also had some great submissions for the Newsweek Pet of the Week from readers.

If you want your pet to be part of next week’s Pet of the Week lineup, be sure to follow the instructions at the end of this story.

Winner

This week’s Pet of the Week is Bandit, a rescue dog from Egypt’s capital Cairo who has a particular love for singing along to classical music.

Found on a rooftop without food or water, Bandit was in a rough shape, both physically and emotionally, and his recovery has involved special care, including melatonin and CBD oil to help him relax at bedtime.

Bandit’s adopter Kate Hayes has been supporting his healing since he came to live with her, and a year ago introduced classical music with the hope of soothing the dog.

To their surprise, Bandit not only found comfort in the music but also developed a strong preference for certain composers.

“We weren’t that surprised that the music helped but we were surprised that he started to distinguish between different composers,” Hayes told Newsweek. “Bandit generally only likes Baroque music preferring Mozart and Vivaldi. He does not like Tchaikovsky or Chopin and hates opera.”

Bandit has even developed his own way of telling his owners how he feels about different compositions

“When Bandit dislikes something he barks until we change the piece. When he likes it he sings,” said Hayes. “Fascinating little guy.”

Finalists

Julia Mallcheck

Our first finalist this week is Huxley, an 8-month-old playful and super lovable pup who lives with owner Julia Mallcheck.

“He enjoys the water and belly rubs,” Mallcheck told Newsweek. “He will do anything for a treat or food.”

“He my sweet troublemaker if there’s a such thing,” his owner joked.

Kate Brewer

Next up this week is rescue dog Dabo Swinney, named after the Clemson football coach by owner Kate Brewer.

Though Dabo had a rough start in life, his remaining years were filled with love and care. Recently, Dabo passed away, leaving his owner heartbroken though she remembered the good times with her pup.

“The Grand Canyon of a hole in my heart will never heal,” Brewer told Newsweek, reflecting on the loss of the lovely Dabo.

Lisa Gilroy

Last but not least this week is Henry, who lives with owner Lisa Gilroy.

Henry has a very important daily ritual. Every day at 5 p.m., he perches by the window waiting for a neighborhood cat who nonchalantly strolls past.

“He sits there waiting to be tortured,” joked Gilroy, sending a picture of Henry looking ready for some great showdown, while the cat simply wanders by the house.
