A woman has gained widespread support online after confronting her husband for skinny-dipping with her best friend.
The Reddit user, r/Marmusha, shared her story, explaining how her friend came over to watch a UFC fight with her and her husband. The OP decided not to join them in drinking due to being hungover from the night before, but things took a strange turn when her husband and best friend made a bet over the fight.
“So here [is] where this whole mess starts. They decide to make a bet on who is going to win the final fight, my husband proposes that the loser has to take a shot of whiskey and jump in the pool naked. One of the bets was that if they both lose (I am not sure how) then they would both jump in the pool naked,” she explained in the Reddit thread “Am I Overreacting?” that garnered significant attention, with 8,800 upvotes.
When she questioned why they had to be naked, her husband ignored her. After the conversation, the woman fell asleep, only to wake up around 1 a.m. to the sound of splashing water. She discovered her husband and best friend skinny-dipping in the pool. Feeling uneasy, she asked her husband to come to bed, but he refused.
Her best friend even invited her to join, but exhausted, the woman declined and went back inside.
“They proceeded to get wasted and swim naked till 3:30 a.m. When I saw him come to make another round of drinks for them and this is where I lost it,” she recounted.
“I started yelling at him, saying that it’s super f***** up that he thinks he can hang out all night butt naked in a pool with my bf and get extremely wasted while his wife is sleeping by herself upstairs. I told him that I don’t hang out with any of his friends naked in the pool and would never do anything like that,” she added.
Later, her best friend knocked on the door, attempting to talk things through. The friend argued that they’d skinny-dipped together before, implying this was no different. However, the woman made it clear that in the past, it was a mutual decision and this time she had not given consent. The confrontation escalated when her friend accused her of being a hypocrite.

The situation worsened when, later that morning, the woman found her husband and best friend asleep on the couch under the same blanket. She said that she had no desire to speak with her husband, asking the Reddit community, “I just wanna know if I am overreacting?”
Experts Weigh In
Thomas Banta, a clinical mental-health counselor from Indianapolis, had an opinion on the matter, telling Newsweek that the woman was not overreacting.
He emphasized the importance of communication and consent in relationships, saying, “It is entirely valid to feel upset under these circumstances because that communication clearly did not happen before this event.
“It’s hard to imagine OP’s friend and husband could argue in good faith that they have no idea why getting hammered and hanging out naked would be pushing boundaries.”
Rachel Goldberg, a licensed marriage and family therapist from California, echoed this sentiment.
She told Newsweek that the behavior was disrespectful, regardless of past experiences. “Even if we consider that they may have believed their past actions made it acceptable, she clearly expressed her discomfort,” she said.
“Despite this, they continued, disregarding her feelings. The author should take a serious look at her relationship with both her husband and best friend.”
Rachel Marmor, a licensed mental-health counselor from South Florida, suggested that the woman’s feelings of betrayal were understandable. She told Newsweek: “Anger, hurt, and confusion are natural reactions when boundaries are violated, especially within intimate relationships.”
She recommended that the woman focus on self-awareness and effective communication to resolve the issue.
Reddit Reacts
Reddit users overwhelmingly supported the woman, agreeing she was not overreacting.
“Not overreacting. They both stepped over boundaries. This is how ‘it’s not what you think’ happens,” one user commented.
“My best friend carried on an affair with my ex for goodness knows how long. I may be jaded, but this should be grounds to leave them both,” shared another.
“I don’t think you are overreacting. I think your best friend sucks though. And your husband does too,” said hawkofquon.
“My friend’s husbands have never been anything but LOOSE acquaintances… this sort of behavior from ‘friends’ is super weird. And obviously the husband is way out of line too,” added jusy_says_.
