Charts Show Russian Artillery, Troop, and Tank Losses in 2024 So Far
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On Wednesday, Kyiv reported that Russian forces lost 1,130 troops, six tanks, and 25 artillery systems within the space of 24 hours.

Ukraine regularly releases updates on Russian losses since Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of its Eastern European neighbor in February 2022.

Newsweek has visualized Russian losses of artillery systems, tanks, and military personnel so far in 2024, according to data sourced from the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russia does not publicize its military losses, and analysts are skeptical of reports released by both sides. Newsweek has contacted the Ukrainian and Russian defense ministries for comment via email.

Artillery Systems

Ukrainian reports indicated that June was Russia’s worst month for artillery losses in the war so far, with 1,415 Russian artillery systems destroyed—records since surpassed, according to subsequent updates from July and August.

Newsweek reported earlier this month that in July Russia lost 1,520 artillery systems and in August lost 1,517, per figures from Kyiv.

So far in September, Ukraine claims that 518 Russian artillery pieces have been destroyed. If accurate, Russian artillery losses since the 2022 invasion now total more than 18,000.

Military Personnel

Citing unnamed intelligence sources, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the number of human casualties, injured or killed, across both sides of the conflict since February 2022 has surpassed one million.

Russia’s worst month in 2024 for personnel casualties was May, which saw 38,940 inflicted. June saw 35,030, July, 35,680, and August, 36,810. At the time of writing, Russia has experienced over 20,000 personnel casualties in September.

Moscow last updated its own casualty figures in September 2022, when it said just under 6,000 Russian soldiers had been killed.

Tanks

May was Russia’s worst month for tank losses so far this year, with 428 destroyed. It was the second deadliest month in the war for Russian tank crews, following October 2023 with 521.

Subsequent months saw 359 losses in June, 300 in July, 193 in August, and, so far in September, 99.

On Wednesday, Ukraine released footage of a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian tank. In the video, drones are seen apparently crashing into what Kyiv said was a Russian T-80BVM tank, which was left in flames following the assault.

Figures published by the Ukrainian military in June indicated that almost 8,000 tanks had been lost by Russian forces since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

That total has now risen to 8,691, according to the most recent reports.
