The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a legal battle against Visa, a key sponsor of the VCARB Formula 1 team, alleging serious antitrust violations.
Announced recently by Attorney General Merrick Garland, the DOJ accuses Visa of monopolistic practices in the debit transaction markets.
Attorney General Merrick Garland outlined the DOJ’s case against Visa, stating, as quoted by Racing News 365:
“[Visa] deploys a web of unlawful, anticompetitive agreements to penalise merchants and banks for using competing payment networks.

“At the same time, it coerces would-be market entrants into unlawful agreements not to compete by threatening high fees if they do not cooperate and promising big payoffs if they do.
“The result is a debit market where Visa has unlawfully amassed the power to extract fees that far exceed what it could charge in a competitive market.”
The lawsuit hinges on allegations under Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act, which prohibits the restraint of trade between states or foreign nations. Specifically, the DOJ claims that Visa has created a network of illicit agreements designed to penalize merchants and banks that opt for rival payment networks. This monopolistic behavior, according to the DOJ, has allowed Visa to extract exorbitant fees from transactions, far exceeding what a competitive market would allow.
Visa general counsel Julie Rottenberg has released a statement following the filing of the lawsuit, which reads:
“Anyone who has bought something online, or checked out at a store, knows there is an ever-expanding universe of companies offering new ways to pay for goods and services.
“The lawsuit ignores the reality that Visa is just one of many competitors in a debit space that is growing, with entrants who are thriving.
“We are proud of the payments network we have built, the innovation we advance, and the economic opportunity we enable.”
Visa joined VCARB as title sponsor starting from the 2024 season as the team transitioned from AlphaTauri to Visa Cash App RB.
The team is currently running in the sixth position in the Constructors’ Standings with 34 points, a 3 point lead on Haas in seventh position with 31 points. Drivers, Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo are placed twelfth and fourteenth in the Drivers’ Championship with 22 and 12 points, respectively.
This comes after increasing speculation that Ricciardo is due to be replaced by Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson before the end of the season, however, this has not been confirmed yet.
