Scones Recall Update As FDA Sets Risk Level

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed the risk level of two scone products voluntarily recalled by Skagit River Bakery & Café, due to undeclared allergens.

Batches of Blueberry and Marionberry Scones were pulled off shelves by the Washington-based firm on August 22, because soy lecithin and soybean oil weren’t on the label.

An FDA update Wednesday said the classification for both recalls has been determined as Class II—when the “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

For comparison, Class III is used in “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.”

Class I, the most severe category, is issued in “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recall applies to an estimated 1,200 units of Marionberry Scones, which are “bulk packaged in cake boxes with parchment paper, unwrapped.”

“Products are not individual labeled and are held in bulk for retail sale—Each location has a notebook with all the ingredients used in the scones,” the FDA said.

Skagit River Bakery & Café voluntarily initiated the recall, after it was notified by a phone call.

Undeclared soy lecithin and soybean oil can be dangerous for people who have soy allergies, who can suffer symptoms ranging from mild rashes, itches and hives to, in rare cases, severe anaphylaxis which can be life-threatening, according to Anaphylaxis U.K, which carries out research on serious allergies.

People with soy allergies can suffer an immediate reaction or a delayed reaction, which can come on hours to days after eating soy on Tuesday.

Newsweek has contacted Skagit River Bakery & Café for any further comment.

It comes after the FDA recalled a number of dog food products after they were found to be contaminated with harmful bacteria.

Several of the beef and chicken dog food products produced by the brand Answers Pet Food, based in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, were found to have tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono).

The FDA recommends that these products should be “thrown out or destroyed in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it.”

The withdrawn products, which are contained in 4-pound half-gallon cartons and sold online and in stores nationwide, are the following:
