Former President Donald Trump has finally commented on the scandal involving Republican North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, the state’s current lieutenant governor.
Controversy erupted last week after reports emerged claiming that Robinson made a series of inflammatory posts to an adult website, including a description of himself as a “Black Nazi,” praise for Adolf Hitler’s Nazi manifesto Mein Kampf and a fond recollection of “peeping” on women in bathrooms.
Trump, who endorsed Robinson and praised him as “Martin Luther King on steroids,” has been conspicuously silent on the scandal, perhaps due to North Carolina being a pivotal swing state that could decide a tight contest in this year’s presidential election.
The former president finally weighed in on Thursday, telling a reporter at New York’s Trump Tower the following when asked whether he planned to withdraw his endorsement of Robinson: “Uh, I don’t know the situation.”
Several of Robinson’s top staffers have resigned following the revelations, although the lieutenant governor has repeatedly denied making the comments and dismissed the reports as “salacious tabloid lies.”
