In WWE, 2025 will be the year of John Cena. The Doctor of Thuganomics is set to go on his retirement tour, battling old foes and new as he says goodbye to the company and industry that made him the megastar he is today.
One of Cena’s greatest rivalries was with CM Punk, resulting in some of the greatest matches in both wrestlers’ careers.
Now, almost 11 years after they last faced off against each other, Punk has weighed in on who he thinks should end Cena’s career.

During an interview with 1035 KISSFM, Punk was asked who he’d like to see Cena face for the final match. For his credit, Punk was very diplomatic in his answer.
“Oh gosh. I’d have to ask John,” Punk said. “Everybody’s gonna have their two cents of what they do. But what I love about John coming out and saying, like, ‘Hey, this is it. This is going to be a journey that we’re all going to go on together. And this is it for me.’ I really like that, because I think he gets to kind of write his love letter to pro wrestling on his way out.”
Still, Punk was more than ready to throw his hat into the ring.
“So I’ve always said this since he announced he was going to retire. If he wants to get in the ring with me, whether it’s tag or whatever, I’d be flattered. But if I’m not part of that story, that’s that’s great too.”
“I’m going to be a fan, just like everybody else sitting there and watching it, like I’m excited to see what he wants to do, what he’s going to do, what’s going to happen.”
That being said, Punk did have two other names that he thought could
“He’s had such a great career. I think it’s easy to say, you could say Randy [Orton]. I think some people would say me. Knowing John, I’m assuming it’s going to be somebody new someone he can hand the baton to.”
“So it might be Gunther, it might be somebody that he has his eye on that nobody else is really seeing. You don’t know. That’s what’s exciting to me about it really.”
While it’s safe to say that fans will get to see Cena and Orton battle it out during his Farewell Tour, Gunther defeating Cena in his final match would definitely cement the Ring General as one of the top heels in WWE, if not all of professional wrestling.
