A man has been slammed for inviting his friends on his honeymoon, against his new wife’s wishes.
In a post on Reddit‘s AITA subreddit titled “AITA for telling my husband he ruined our honeymoon?” user Due-Ad5669 explained that her dream honeymoon turned into a nightmare after her husband secretly arranged for their friends to meet them at the hotel.
In the post, the newlywed explained: “A few weeks before the wedding, my husband started talking about how it would be ‘fun’ if we invited his best friend and his wife to join us for part of the honeymoon. I immediately told him that I wasn’t comfortable with the idea because I wanted this trip to be about us, but he kept bringing it up, saying it would make the trip ‘more exciting’ and less ‘boring.'”
But she put her foot down, telling her husband that she wanted them to have a private vacation for themselves. When they arrived on honeymoon though, they were not expecting what happened next.
“To my shock, his best friend and wife were waiting at the hotel lobby,” she wrote. “My husband had secretly invited them anyway, saying it would be ‘no big deal’ and that we could still have our alone time. But the entire trip turned into group dinners, shared activities, and zero intimacy.”
The post, which has gained over 14,000 upvotes, sparked a flood of reactions, with many Reddit users slamming the husband.
“I’m concerned that your husband thinks spending time with you alone is boring,” said eve_tpa. While Redditor KindlyCelebration223 said: “NTA. He couldn’t manage to even pretend to care about your wants/needs/opinion or respect you for even one week after your wedding. Has the license been filed yet?”
But Hannah Reeves, an LMFT relationship therapist writer for Private Sugar Club online dating platform, told Newsweek that perhaps there was more to the vacation confusion.
“Some people crave familiarity, even on big trips. Maybe the husband felt a little anxious about the whole ‘just us’ experience or wanted to share this new chapter with a close friend for comfort,” Reeves told Newsweek. “Maybe he just thought he’d found an excellent honeymoon idea, a blend of adventure and comfort that he thought would make it all the more special. Sometimes, people interpret excitement differently.”

When the couple arrived home, the wife explained that she told her husband how it made her feel to share their honeymoon. “I told him he ruined what was supposed to be our special honeymoon. He just shrugged and said I was making it a bigger deal than it was,” said the poster on Reddit.
But Reeves explained that the couple missed an opportunity for a healthy conversation. “This couple missed a big chance to set boundaries, which is something I constantly remind my clients about,” she said. “Marriage starts with the small stuff, those little ‘let’s get on the same page’ moments. If one partner says, ‘This time is just for us,’ the other needs to hear that loud and clear, not bulldoze right over it. No one wants a first honeymoon memory of silently seething through group dinners.”
