Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes’ Romance Struggles—’Rockier Than Ocean Waves’

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes opened up about their romance struggles on their podcast, nearly two years after their relationship went public in November 2022.

The former GMA3: What You Need to Know co-hosts were fired from ABC after their off-camera romance came to light. At the time, Robach, 51, was still legally married to Melrose Place actor Andrew Shue, and Holmes, 47, was still married to attorney Marilee Fiebig. Both Robach and Shue said divorce proceedings had already begun with their respective partners when the news broke. Robach and Holmes finalized their divorces in 2023.

During Thursday’s episode of Amy & T.J., the couple discussed the concept of an autopilot relationship and revealed they put their own romance on the back burner as they focused on children and work.

“We are together all the time, but either we were with the kids or we were working, and we were working a lot, which is great—we love to work. But we didn’t get to have, like, us time,” Robach said. “We work together and we are in a relationship together and we were friends before as colleagues, so it’s a strange thing like you’ve got the work relationship and then you’ve got the romantic relationship, and the two actually don’t coexist.”

“We might be in an autopilot relationship,” Holmes said, explaining that “the relationship becomes secondary.”

“We stopped making our relationship a priority, I think is fair to say,” he added, to which Robach agreed.

The former ABC News reporter said that the first day they spent together just the two of them “wasn’t a great first day.”

“I think sometimes anything that’s built up that hasn’t been verbalized just because you haven’t had the alone time to actually have true connections, it all kind of comes out in whatever way it does,” Robach said. “So the first day was a little rough, but we’re good now.”

“Ha, a little rough,” Holmes responded. “It was rockier than the ocean waves.”

The couple went on to explain that they booked a vacation, but everything started to go wrong when they got to the airport. Robach admitted she didn’t include Holmes’ TSA pre-check number on his ticket and accidentally listed his birthday as 1997 instead of 1977.

“I clearly made the reservation, so it was completely my fault,” Robach said. “So not only did I rob you of the TSA pre-check, I then got us flagged—or got you flagged—because I entered your incorrect birth year.”

The NBC News alum added that she “made it worse” while trying to explain their situation to a man so they didn’t have to wait in another long line.

“In my haste of feeling so guilty, like I need to fix the situation, I just jumped into the conversation and completely interrupted,” Robach continued. “It was as rude as it gets.”

Despite the hiccups, Holmes said: “There’s nothing to get onto you for, I know you felt bad about it. There was no reason to make you feel worse.”

The pair shared, however, that they didn’t speak to each other on the airplane.

“I talked to the flight attendants more than I talked to you,” Holmes said, while Robach added: “You had your AirPods in the entire time too.”

Holmes said, though, that they’re “laughing about it now.”

“There was no anger, it just took some time,” Robach replied.

In a preview for the episode shared to the Amy & T.J. podcast Instagram account, fans praised the couple for their honesty.

“Love that you are both so open and honest. It shows your level of commitment to each other ❤️,” @brittany_dion_cavacas said.

“Love your love,” @goldpdp wrote.

Newsweek reached out to Robach via email and Holmes via social media for additional comment.

Robach has two daughters named Ava and Annalise that she shares with her ex-husband Tim McIntosh. Holmes, meanwhile, is a dad to daughter Sabine with Fiebig and shares daughter Brianna and son Jaiden with first wife Amy Ferson.

Following their splits, Robach and Holmes’ exes, Shue and Fiebig, began dating each other. Earlier this month, Shue spoke out about their relationship while appearing on the Still the Place podcast.

“I’m doing very well,” the actor said. “I am very happy.”
