USPS will cut 10,000 jobs after signing a deal with Elon Musk’s DOGE

In a letter to Congress on Thursday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said that USPS planned to eliminate 10,000 positions using a voluntary program of early retirement over the next thirty days in order to reduce costs for the financially strapped U.S. Postal Service.

USPS employs approximately 635,000 people.

DeJoy confirmed that USPS is working with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.

He wrote: “Last evening, I signed an agreement to help us identify and achieve further efficiencies with representatives from the General Services Administration (GSA) and DOGE.”

CBS News reports that the move “is seen as a means to make DOGE happy”.

DeJoy met first with DOGE representatives Monday, according to this source.

Recently, the postmaster general announced that he would resign of a position he had been appointed by President Trump. The White House is yet to name a successor.

The Postal Service reported in November that its annual losses had increased to almost $10 billion for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024.
