A Justice Department official confirmed that Maurene Comey was fired from her position as a prosecutor at the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office on Wednesday.
Comey was most recently involved in the prosecution of Sean “Diddy Combs” and had previously prosecuted Jeffrey Epstein, a sex offender and his associate Ghislaine Maxiwell.
It was not immediately apparent why she had been fired as senior trial lawyer at the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York.
According to reports, she was never given a reason as to why her firing occurred.
Comey was fired at the same time that Trump’s administration is investigating her father. Trump has always vilified him. These investigations are reportedly related to James Comey’s role in the investigation of links between Trump’s 2016 campaign with Russia as well as to a recent Instagram posting by James Comey, which Trump allies deemed as threatening.
Laura Loomer was one of the voices from Trump’s right wing base that renewed their attacks on Maurene Comey in recent months. She had called for Bondi to dismiss her in May. Loomer, who has led the MAGA base in recent months’ outcry against the Justice Department’s refusal to release more Epstein-related files, is now leading the MAGA base.
According to a source familiar with the situation who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about it, Maurene camey received no explanation as to why she was fired.
There was no indication that she had been fired by Jay Clayton, the interim U.S. Attorney, or if the Justice Department Headquarters ordered her to be terminated.
