Dolphins Sign Jalen Ramsey to Massive Extension, Creating NFL History For Second Time

Just before the start of the new season for the Miami Dolphins, the team has reached an agreement with star cornerback Jalen Ramsey on a three-year extension. The deal will pay him $24.1 million per season, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

This is the second time in his career that Ramsey has become the highest-paid cornerback in history. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news of the extension on social media.

Miami will now go into the season having secured their star defensive player for the next few years. They will be looking to build upon the success that they have seen in recent seasons, with Ramsey being a focal point on the defensive side of the field.

Last season, the veteran cornerback posted 22 total tackles and three interceptions in 10 games played. He helped Miami get to the postseason and gave them a solid weapon in the secondary.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ramsey posted a 52.9 passer rating when quarterbacks tried to throw his way. He made sure to be a lock-down style of cornerback for Miami anytime he was on the field.

Since entering the NFL, Ramsey has been one of the better cornerbacks in the league. The former Florida State product is gearing up for his second season with the Dolphins after being traded to the team during the 2023 offseason.

He gained some familiarity with the rest of the players but should be more comfortable this year. However, it will be his first season working under new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.

The former Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach comes over and is looking to take this defense to new heights. Earlier in the offseason, he called Ramsey the “ultimate chess piece”, saying that he wants to use his versatility all over the field this season.

“You talk about prototype corners, he is that,” Weaver said, via the team’s official transcript. “Size, length, speed, competitiveness. The thing about him is I think he is your ultimate chess piece. So to have him just sit outside and be a field corner or boundary corner or something like that is a detriment to him. We got to find ways to move him around where he can be most impactful. We’re committed to doing that.”

As long as Ramsey can stay healthy, he will make life tough on opposing offenses. His vision on defense has set him apart over the years and this new extension reflects that impact.

Miami hasn’t won a playoff game in 24 years but Ramsey will be looking to change that fact this season.
