LIVE UPDATES: Candidates Back on the Campaign Trail After Trump Assassination Attempt
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The candidates and their running mates are back on the campaign trail today for the first time since Sunday’s apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance will deliver remarks at 1:30 p.m. in Sparta, Michigan. He is set to talk about “illegal immigrants” and the border, according to the campaign. Four hours later, at 5:30 p.m., Vance will hold a rally in Eu Claire, Wisconsin.

Trump will also be in Michigan, hosting a town hall event in Flint at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris has no official campaign events in the diary but will be interviewed by members of the National Association of Black Journalists this afternoon in Philadelphia.

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff will deliver remarks at a campaign reception in Washington D.C.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is set to deliver brief remarks at a political event in Macon, Georgia at 10 a.m. He will then attend events in Atlanta in the afternoon before heading to North Carolina for a rally in Asheville at 6:30 p.m.

Finally, today was also supposed to be the date for a Fox News proposed presidential debate between Trump and Harris. Since the first debate between the candidates on September 10, which viewers and pundits declared a victory for the vice president, no more debates have been confirmed.

Former Trump strategist: We have ‘crossed a line’ on violent rhetoric

Former Trump strategist David Urban called for politicians on both sides of the aisle to take personal responsibility for “incendiary language”, and suggested that violent rhetoric had put the country’s politics on a “slippery slope.”

Speaking on CNN, Urban, a senior advisor to Trump’s 2016 campaign, proposed that Democrats and Republicans stop blaming each other for inciting violence and focus on stopping their own members from speaking in that way, saying it was difficult to ascribe blame for the two attacks on Trump.

Urban said: “I wouldn’t want to assign blame for what those two men did, they obviously both have mental illness issues. But when we talk about blame and incendiary language, I think there’s a level of personal responsibility in America.

“I think that if Democrats and Republicans want to agree that Democrats aren’t inciting violence, and Republicans aren’t either, that has to be across the board.

“You can’t just say, ‘Well, Trump incited violence on January 6 by telling people to go to the Capitol’ and then say ‘He’s being a threat to democracy and our Union will end,’ like that doesn’t matter. That’s not normal. We crossed a line there. That is not acceptable behavior, and it’s a slippery slope from there.”

Laura Loomer Sends Message to ‘Haters’—’I Have Nothing to Lose Anymore’

Far-right activist Laura Loomer has lashed out at the “haters” who have been attacking her recently amid her apparent rising influence within former President’s Donald Trump‘s campaign.

Loomer, a self-described “proud Islamophobe” known for spreading conspiracy theories, has come under scrutiny for her rhetoric and extremist views after she was seen accompanying Trump on a flight to the ABC presidential debate.

The two men who law enforcement say attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump this summer were of different generations, with unclear motives and apparently differing political allegiances.

The one — and perhaps only — thing they had in common, aside from an apparent desire to kill Trump: both gave small-dollar donations to Democrats through ActBlue, the Democratic-aligned fundraising powerhouse that has raised more than $15 billion for progressive causes and politicians since forming in 2004.

More Than Half of Republicans Believe Haitians Are Eating Pets: Poll

More than half of Trump supporters believe the unsubstantiated claim made by the former president that Haitian immigrants are abducting and eating cats and dogs, according to a new poll.

Trump’s remark, made during his first debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, was based on social media rumors, which lack evidence, that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are eating pets.

Secret Service ‘stonewalling’ Trump attempted assassination investigation: Hawley

Sen. Josh Hawley says the Secret Service is failing to provide answers regarding the two attempted assassinations of former President Donald Trump.

“They are slow-walking, if not stonewalling Congress’ request for facts, for documents,” the Missouri Republican told Fox News on Monday evening. “They owe the American people an accounting of what happened in July. Just like they owe them an accounting of what happened on the weekend.”

On Monday, Hawley unveiled a 22-page whistleblower report detailing the failures of the Secret Service in the leadup to the attempted assassination of the former president on July 13. The report decried the agency’s “catastrophic failure” in Butler, Pennsylvania, and accused the Secret Service, FBI and Department of Homeland Security of trying “to evade real accountability.”

The report came only a day after an apparent second attempt on the former president’s life as he was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Hawley said the Secret Service needs to be asked the same questions that arose in his report regarding the latest incident.

“Why wasn’t the roof secured? We know that the sight plan called for a security perimeter around that building. There wasn’t one. It called for law there to be law enforcement on top of that roof. They weren’t there. Just like this guy at the perimeter of the golf course for 12 hours. Why didn’t secret service sweep it beforehand?”
