An American woman was left stunned while on vacation in France when her British boyfriend, whom she didn’t know could speak French, unexpectedly ordered their meal fluently in the local language.

The woman, Nikkolina, who would prefer to keep her full name private, captured her surprise on camera and shared it to TikTok where it quickly went viral. The video, posted on August 30 under the couple’s joint account @jackandnik, has amassed more than 2.2 million views so far. Viewers watched as Nikkolina expressed her shock as her boyfriend, Jack Stafford, conversed with the waiter in French—a skill he had kept from her.

“We met in England when Nikkolina was on her first solo travel trip, and it was her first time outside the U.S.,” Stafford told Newsweek. “We met at a restaurant in Mile End, London without speaking, and then, coincidentally, saw each other again at a pub nearby. That’s when we started talking.”

What followed was a whirlwind romance, which has led to the couple now being together for 14 months. The pair initially exchanged numbers after which Stafford invited Nikkolina to join him on a last-minute trip to a music festival in Croatia. She surprised him by booking a flight and festival ticket immediately and they spent a few memorable days together.

“I knew I was falling in love with her, even though we had only just met,” Stafford said.

Despite the physical distance between them—Nikkolina in Arizona and Jack in London—the couple managed to maintain their relationship, seeing each other once every six to eight weeks.

“Long distance was emotional torture, but we knew what we had was special and so we decided to take the leap,” Stafford said.

The distance finally ended in May when Stafford moved to Arizona to be with his girlfriend. Now, the couple are traveling the world together and are planning to settle in Australia once Nikkolina’s visa is approved. Their TikTok account has been a key part of their journey, keeping them connected during their time apart and providing a creative outlet to share their experiences with viewers online.

“We created the TikTok account for fun, and more importantly, to make us feel connected when we were apart,” Stafford said.

Since being together, they have enjoyed documenting their travels and cultural experiences.

“We don’t take TikTok too seriously, but we’ve noticed that our posts about the differences between U.K. and U.S. cultures have been doing really well,” he said.

Their approach to social media, he explained, is about staying authentic.

“Our social media has always been us being us, without acting up to the camera,” Stafford added.

TikTok Users React

The viral video of Stafford ordering his meal in French has drawn a range of reactions online. While some viewers praised his effort, others critiqued his command of French.

“We’ve had numerous French people say they couldn’t understand what I was saying or that it sounded like GCSE-level French,” Stafford said. “But the waiter understood me perfectly, and that’s all that mattered!”

One TikTok user commented, “I did not understand a word that man said, and I’m French.”

Another user posted: “this is exactly how my girlfriend looked at me when I started speaking Klingon at Prezzo.” Prezzo is an Italian chain restaurant in the United Kingdom.

“Had no idea yet was filming him,” a third TikTok user wrote.

Despite the occasional trolling, the couple remain unfazed.

“We see through the trolls and don’t let it stop us from posting what we want,” Stafford said.

They’ve even received plenty of support from their digital community who defend them against negative comments. As the couple continue their travels and await their move to Australia, they plan to keep sharing their journey, with a focus on showcasing different cultures and cuisines.

“We hope to inspire people to be bold in life and go for it—whatever that may be,” Stafford said.
