The Miami Heat have become known for being one of the more outspoken franchises across the NBA and that continued on Monday. Following recent rumors coming out about Springfield, Ohio, the Heat waded into political waters to come to the defense of their Haitian employees.
“The Miami Heat staff, like Miami itself, is a diverse and brilliant mix of vibrant cultures, including many members of our Haitian community,” the organization said. “The false narrative surrounding them is hurtful and offensive has sadly made innocent people targets of hateful speech and physical threats. Our Haitian employees, fans, and friends deserve better.”
Shortly before the final presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, rumors started to fly about Haitian migrants in Springfield eating residents’ pets. These claims were proven to be false but despite this, former President Trump continued to push the envelope during the debate.
“They’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats,” Trump said during an answer to a question about immigration. “They’re eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”
ABC News anchor co-moderator, David Muir, fact-checked former President Trump almost immediately. Muir pointed to the fact that the city manager of Springfield said that there were no credible reports of pets being harmed by the city’s migrant community.
The comments coming from former President Trump during the debate have caused some issues around the country. There has been a ton of hate being pointed toward Haitian people all over the nation.

Miami is one of the more diverse cities in the world and the organization felt the need to step in to release a statement. President Joe Biden released a statement himself condemning the comments being made by the former President.
“It’s simply wrong. And there’s no place in America. This has to stop — what he’s doing — has to stop,” Biden said during a Black Excellence Brunch hosted at the White House on Friday.
Oftentimes, sports organizations will step into the world of politics and the Heat felt that this moment was big enough for them to do so. We also saw this happen all over the country with teams from all leagues during the protests over the death of George Floyd back in 2020.
With the presidential election just a few months away, it’s important for everyone to do their own research and get out to vote. Many sporting leagues have set up different ways for people to learn more, including the NFL.
