Meghan McCain voiced her support for Taylor Swift following her endorsement of Kamala Harris and being criticized by Donald Trump.
McCain wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on September 15, “There are very few predictable constants in life as much as how much powerful women trigger Donald Trump…. Particularly ones who publicly make it clear they think he is garbage. Taylor Swift is doing nothing but winning here.”
It followed a post from Trump on his social media platform Truth Social saying, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
After much speculation, Swift publicly supported Harris for president in an Instagram post after her debate against Trump on September 10.

Newsweek reached out to McCain’s office, a representative for Swift, and Trump’s campaign for comment via email outside of business hours and will update this article with any response.
The daughter of the late senator and presidential candidate John McCain, Meghan is best known for her writing, contributions to various news outlets, and time on The View, and has previously criticized Trump on numerous occasions.
Although McCain has been registered as a Republican since 2008, she told the LA Times that she is “more liberal on social issues” and has not supported Trump, and called for his removal from office following the attack on the Capitol in 2021.
While giving a eulogy at her father’s funeral in 2018, she criticized Trump’s campaign slogan when she said, “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,” Newsweek previously reported.
Although McCain did not directly reference Trump by name, many felt this was a criticism of the former president and his followers.
McCain has not endorsed either Harris or Trump in the upcoming election, and instead posted on X that she “remains a proud member of the Republican party” and hopes “for brighter days ahead,” Newsweek previously reported.
Her announcement followed her brother, Jimmy McCain, announcing that he had changed his voter registration to Democrat and would be voting for Harris and Tim Walz in November, Newsweek previously reported.
McCain has not always been supportive of Swift, as she criticized her various releases from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), on her podcast this summer.
On her podcast Citizen McCain with Meghan McCain, she asked her co-hosts if they felt Swift’s multiple releases from TTPD hindered the success of other artists and went on to say that her latest release was a “deliberate act to sabotage” Charli XCX’s Brat, Newsweek previously reported.
However, in the podcast episode, McCain did specify that she is “not not a fan” and noted Swift’s kindness towards other artists, as Newsweek previously reported.
McCain is not the only political figure to come to Swift’s defense; Liz Cheney, Al Franken, and Jon Cooper have also spoken out in her favor.
Celebrities who have taken to X to post in Swift’s defense include Stephen King, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and Flavor Flav.
