Every year the NFL hands out awards for Player of the Month. These awards are for AFC Offensive, NFC Offensive, AFC Defensive, NFC Defensive, AFC Special Teams, NFC Special Teams, and Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Month.

Despite these awards not being tallied on player resumes like Pro Bowl, they help to inform the league which players are currently playing at the highest level. That said, here are the NFL Players of the Month for September.

Starting with the AFC:

The AFC Offensive Player of the Year is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. This is not an unfamiliar place for Allen, but he has been on a year in Sep. 2024.

Allen secured 814 yards, 106 rush yards, nine total touchdowns, and a passer rating of 116.5. The Bills are currently 3-1 and are looking like they will run away with the AFC East crown, and is in large part due to Allen.

The AFC Defensive Player of the Month is Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy. Van Noy secured eight tackles, seven tackles for loss, six sacks, one pass defended, and one forced fumble in September.

Van Noy’s total tackles might not be impressive but that many sacks is especially impressive for only four games played.

The AFC Special Team Player of the Month is Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell. Boswell is currently 11/12 with 39 points in September. This includes going two-for-two on field goals over 40 yards, and five-for-six on field goals over 50 yards.

Moving to the NFC:

The NFC Offensive Player of the Month is the Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold. Darnold came out of nowhere in 2024 and had 932 yards, 11 total touchdowns, a passer rating of 118.9, and a 68.90 completion percentage.

Nobody could have predicted Darnold rebounding his career and leading the Vikings to a 4-0 record.

The NFC Defensive Player of the Year is Detroit Lions standout and defensive lineman, Aidan Hutchinson. Hutchinson has 16 tackles, 6.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, and one forced fumble in September. Hutchinson is already having a career year four games into the season.

The NFC Special Teams Player of the Month is Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey who currently has 43 points, 12-for-13 field goals, five-for-five on 40-yard plus field goals, and five-for-six 50-yard plus field goals.

Finally, the Rookie of the Month:

The Offensive Rookie of the Month is Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. After a rough start, Daniels has settled in. He totaled 897 yards, 218 rush yards, seven total touchdowns, and a passer rating of 107.4.

Much like Darnold, nobody could have guessed that Daniels would be this good this early, and have the Commanders sitting at 3-1. They are also in first place in the NFC East. Commanders are flying high, thanks to the efforts of the dynamic man behind the center.

Last but not least is Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jared Verse. Verse has been explosive in his first four games, tallying 19 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble.

Verse might not be the second coming of Aaron Donald, but he is making his presence felt.
